Is it crap?. It does the majority of tasks asked of it relatvely well, it uses resources quite well these days and is much more user friendly than it used to be. With experiance of os's from CPM, DOS, UNIX, Netware, Windows v2.01 - XPSP2 to name a few, i have to personally say this is the best its ever been. My machine runs for weeks without a reboot, updates and protects itself, has plenty of user security and loads of performance. My point is.... its a maturing product, UNIX has been around much longer than Microsoft (the company not the products), and until a GUI was introduced about 10 years ago you needed a Phd in computer science to view a folder let alone do anything else. So before you or anybody else starts whining "oh but Mac is so ...." or " Yeah but UNIX is so ...", remember, they are not market leaders and will not be for the forseable future if ever. Count your blessings you don't have you mess around manually allocating memory or disk block sizes, or juggling partions sizes to suit what you want, and get on with XP

Good question!
I wish I could answer you; but then, I don't use crap!?
I use Linux!
Seriously, I think that all those guys out there who are "Pirating" Windows XP and MS Office deserve the crap they get!
I used to use the legal Windows XP and found out that you can only use the OS twice!
So, when their crappy OS crashed, and I had to format the HDD, I "lost one life"!? And, when it crashes again, as it's bound to, I'd lose the other "life"!?
All their "Updates" for XP and MS Office, which are actually patches to cover loopholes, after some hackers have sent around some really bad viruses, Trojans or worms; took up as much as 6.5 GB of my HDD in the C Drive and the "System Restore Info" took up another 2 GB!?!? I had to reserve 20 GB for just MS Windows XP and MS Office to have it work!?
Do you know something else?
It takes up 512 MB of your RAM for itself!
This is the crappiest OS and Office I've ever seen! And, it costs a bomb!
Little wonder that Bill Gates was among the richest men in the world! He sure reamed all of us!
Now, I got Ubuntu Linux; free of cost, downloaded as an iso image that I burnt straight on to my own legal installation CD, and it came with OpenOffice, again free of cost, which is much better than MS Office! And the Mozilla Firefox is a lot more stable than their crappy IE!? Mozilla Thunderbird, again free of cost, is much better than MS Outlook! And who wants Windows Media Player!? I've been using the Media Player Classic with the Klite Mega Codec Pack, even from my MS Windows XP days, and that's my default player; because it plays any format from xvid, divx, avi, mpeg, mpg, ffd show, MP3, wav, ... you name it!?
And all this didn't cost me a penny!
Go Linux, Man, any day!
MS SUCKS, Big Time!?
Cheers.
PS,
Wonder where the guy who said that Linux is a Windows clone keeps his brains? He must be a tech illiterate!
The other guy is right, though. Open Source is something that only techies can handle. Linux and Java aren't for the tech illiterates.

Life was much better before windows. I still have a DOS computer that I keep for my old software and it never has had a virus or run out of ram memory or taken more than 5 seconds to load any program or file. Now, if you don't have windows, you can't even use most software. I thought that Linnux would help out and be better, but it's just a windows clone that is just as bad.

Well all other OS has their own problem; it's just that no many use the other OS. Why you don't hear too much about ppl complaining bout Linux or FreeBSD, because those who use it are more likely to be techie who love to fiddle around with the source code :)
