Install VLC player.

It is able to play ALL formats except Real Media, which is proprietary.

All codecs are within the program's module, you don't have to find a codec anymore

Give it a try, the only player you'll ever need, really

To find out which program compressed it open it with GSpot. As far as codecs, installing the Xvid codec should allow you to play your .avi file with just about any media player. Or if you want to play .avi files and save yourself a lot of headache with other codecs in the future, just install ffdshow. I recommend installing ffdshow.

I think I'm right that AVI isn't a codec, it's a file wrapper. The actual file could be 1001 things. Your best bet is to download Videolan (www.videolan.org) which plays pretty much anything and is available for Windows, Mac and (I think) Linux.

Well since you don't mention which packs you have downloaded I'll take a punt and suggest you download K-Lite Mega Codec pack which includes media player classic: if this pack doesn't play it, I can only think your avi video is corrupted.

Or you could try MediaCoder - although it is primarily a universal encoder, it plays just about anything too. Open source, free

Be careful - if its a movie of an adult nature, it may have a virus in it, and not be a real movie at all....... but then, that would serve you right if it was.

If not, try real alternative player (google it) or something like that...
