What do the colours of diploma stoles mean?

Have you guys seen those teachers/graduating people who wear the black robes with a coloured stole (the scarf thing). I was just wondering what the colours of the stoles actually mean. Are they the same for every kind of diploma are, do they mean a different thing for different kinds of diplomas? And are they different in different countries? I'm referring specifically to Australia.

They usually represent the different schools graduating, like one color represents the law school, one represents the medical school, and so on.
