It depends on which way you define it.
From the scientific point of view, a lot of people think that the very first chicken came from an egg, and therefore the egg came first. Many scientist believe that there is a link between birds and reptiles, that certain species of dinosaurs evolved into birds. There were species of dinosaurs that had feathers, and parts of the bone structure of dinosaurs are similar to the bone structure of birds. The chicken could have been created from a mutation, and therefore the egg came first.
But if the question is talking about a chicken egg coming from a chicken, well the chicken would come first. That chicken could have come from the mutated embryo, then layed the first chicken egg.
Everybody knows the goose came first! I agree with you though... it's based on what we believe. I believe that the chicken came first not just because its written in the Bible. The Bible said that God created "every living creature that moves... every winged bird according to its kind" before blessing them to "multiply on the earth"<-- Genesis 1: 21-22.

Something else made the egg. The hen was a evolution change from its mother. Just like when humans have a different looking child with different abilities.
