congratulations on being a stait A student... Keep up the good work ...But as a child of only 12 years you should be in the bed at 9.00 p.m. and out the bed at 6.00 a.m. So before you head off to school you could do some household chores. Nothing heavy just take out the garbage get yourself ready for school and have time to watch one cartoon show. You need all the strength you have and mind power to keep them A's so you need the appropiate rest.. And again keep up the good work you will be on the honor roll in no time..

Depends on what time he/she need to do something in the morning, most 12 years should be sleeping 9 to 10 hours on an average per day some my say 8 to 10, but say minimum 8 hours.

Say the boy has to be out of house at 8:00am sharp and needs 1hr to get ready then just count back.

The number of hours of sleep is very personal, some can function well with 8hr minimum and some need lot more, parents who keep an eye on their children can observe them, hence they are the best judge of the sleep requirements of their children.

Most of the other answer makes sense. So have him follow your rules, if he does not like them request explanation politely. Occasionally you can allow him to stay up late if needed. Show him this answer.

Good Luck.

Minoo.

PS:
Boys on farm, help with farm work and need to get up early.

My kids are all in bed by 9 p.m. My oldest is 10. They need their sleep and there is no reason to let them stay up late.

Grades shouldn't affect a bed time. He could be getting straight A's BECAUSE of his bed time. A bed time shouldn't be reward or punishment for grades.
