my mom always told us that our allowance is: roof over our heads, food in our stomachs and things to have.
and that a family works together to keep the house clean and run smoothly.
if you choose to give them money I would say what you-as the parent- could afford.
i know a few men that dont know how to clean their own places or choose not to because their moms and sisters did it all, they expect their wives to do it too.
teach your sons to keep things clean and organized and that they need to know these things when they have their own family.
doing wash and wash dishes and cleaning bathroom and vaccuum. teach them these things so they dont depend on women to do these things for them. they need to learn to be responsible , independant teens.
their good grades will be awarded when they are accepted in a college they want to go to and get the career they like, thats when the good grades are awarded. not by parents.

Maybe I'm older than I thought, or a little out of touch, but don't parents give allowance for CHORES around the house? Taking out the garbage? Mowing the grass? Cleaning their rooms? Helping do other things? The more work they do, the more they get.
Good grades should be rewarded, though, and I have to agree. But paying on a weekly basis? Do they get report cards every week now? I think payment should come when the report cards do. A different dollar amount for different grades is a good idea.

An allowance is good to establish for these guys, given their aptitude and hard work in school.
However, the boys should earn a bonus when they work together (peer tutoring if you will) and/or participate in extracurricular activities.
If they do good in school AND help out by doing chores around the house, you should hook them up with fun activity that you can participate in too. That way everybody can leave their books for a couple of hours and have some fun 'with the fam' as they say...

I got a weekly allowance for 'pocket money' and had to buy gifts, my candy, gum and treats, and also build my savings out of it.
I say $20 a week is a good amount for each boy, if they're required to save $5 each week. This should be the only money given, though. And no buying incidentals for them separate from the allowance!,
