She isn't breaking the skin, but she is getting close. She's 5 weeks old, so I can't give her anything to make her sick. We tell her "no, no kalli" and tap her mouth, but it won't help. Please, give me some advice!

GitEmGang, I had a puppy I got at 5 weeks before and it lived 14 YEARS!!! That's probably longer than you'll be able to keep anything alive.

Provide her with toys to chew, she needs to chew. Freeze a clean wet cloth (twisted) so she can chew it. When she tries to bite people, yelp. That's right , yelp loud, like it hurt and immediately stop playing/petting her. Ignore her for a few minutes. She will get the idea biting hurts and not do it.

Well 5 weeks is way too young to have a new puppy because at this time he should be learning and socializing with his litter mates which is an important part of his learned behavior.Nipping and Mouthing-these behaviors are an extension of litter mate play.A dog will try this but must learn immediately not to use his/her mouth in this way.The dog will not outgrow it.
-grabbing the muzzle, or holding the dog down and sharply commanding him is not an appropriate method of correction-neither is tap her mouth as this will eventually cause hand or head shyness which is a much more difficult behaviour to correct.
-Command and then supply the puppy with the appropriate chew toy. From day one, the dog should be directed to his own chew objects-try not to have soft ones as they can mimic our soft skin.
- if the puppy nips withdraw all attention and cease activity with the dog. Withdrawing of your hands quickly will turn this activity into an undesirable game. Interact with the puppy once again , but leave if nipping begins. Remember, quiet behaviour is rewarded. You may also give the puppy a period of time out-ignore him.(As this is what his littermates would do he will eventually realize this behaviour is not fun)
-To teach bite inhibition(which is very important ) at around 3 months of age-tuck a treat in the palm of your hand and enforce the "OFF" command ONCE the dogs muzzle pulls away. Pause and reward. Good Luck!!

being that she is a puppy, more than likely when she matures, she will stop. although sometimes that is determined on why she is biting in the first place. as puppy's grow they tend to act as little baby's. your puppy may be teething so it feels good to bit on something. try giving her some toys or chew bones to help her get through the teething process. if shes still at that point that her teeth have yet to grow it could also be that shes looking for food.. try sending her to her mom if she nurses or feed her the food she is normally giving. shes still so young to really comprehend anything right now, give her time to mature and don't expect anything to soon from her just keep working with her, she will soon stop.

Besides getting the puppy something to chew on, what works for the immediate is when the puppy bites, clap your hands loudly and say "No!" Then stop all interaction with the puppy - even walk away. If you do this consistently the puppy will learn to associate that biting means no play time and it isn't fun. Good luck.

Puppies are teething and that's why they bite...they want to chew on things to massage their gums. Give her some rawhide chews or bones to teeth on. Find an old leather glove and let her chew on it with your hand inside. Great teething exercise and you can gently massage her gums, also good for bonding with your new puppy. Put everything out of reach that you don't want her to chew on, shoes, underwear, books, whatever. She won't understand "no" when it comes to this because she is teething, so no need to try to discipline her. It will only serve to confuse her and make her anxious. Show her some lovin' with a rawhide chew or small rawhide bone and she'll be just fine. Enjoy. ;)

when she starts biting, put a chew toy in her mouth and say good girl when she starts chewing it...remember, she is teething and just like a human child, her gums hurt.
