Janey and the monster under the bed.
Janey never really had any problems with monsters under her bed, in fact the only thing under her bed were her shoes and a few odd dust bunnies which seemed to have a nest there. Her parents were grateful that they never had to re-assure her that there was no such thing as monsters, but there were days when they wondered why didn’t she suffer from monsterunderthebedphobia like so many children of her age.
Things were destined to change though, when one night a monster moved in and took up residence under Janeys bed. The first she knew about it was while she was sitting on her bed reading her comic. There was a loud sniff, then another, then a sneeze!!!
Janey looked around, there was nobody in sight.
A small voice came from under the bed, "excuse me".
Janey couldn’t believe her ears, there was somebody under her bed! She knelt on the carpet and peered into the darkness. There was definitely something there, she could just make it out by the way it blocked out the light. "Hullo? Are you feeling sick?"
The voice did not seem very scarey "No, its just that these dust bunnies make me sneeze."
Janey was taken aback, "but who are you?"
"Don't you know? I am a monster under the bed."
"I don’t have any monsters under my bed."
"I am sorry, I moved in here because I heard that you were a sweet little girl who wouldn’t mind her very own monster. In reality though, I am not a bad monster, I am a good one."
"A good monster? But monsters aren’t supposed to be good!"
"Well, to tell you the truth they are supposed to be bad, but I am scared of them myself which is why I am a good monster and hiding under your bed."
"But why would a monster be scared of other monsters?"
"Have you ever seen a monster? They are scarey, all teeth and eyes and bad breath."
"Don’t you have teeth and eyes and bad breath as well?"
There was silence, then a sniff and the monster started crying again, "Yes I do…. But I don’t want people to be scared of me because of how I look."
Janey rummaged in her pocket and drew out a hankie, which she passed to the monster under the bed. There was a brief pause then a thunderous "Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarp".
"Er… keep the hankie I think."
"Thank you Janey, you are very sweet. I want to be sweet too. I want to wear pretty dresses and play with dolls and wear pink all the time. "
"You are a girl monster?"
"Yes, couldn’t you tell?"
"Sorry no, but then I have never met any monsters. What is your name??"
"My name is ArghehueyJghXziz."
"Oh, that’s a hard one to say, why don’t you choose an easier name while you are here?"
"That’s a good idea Janey, I think I will become Melissa, Melissa Monster."
"Oh yes, that’s a very pretty name. But are you going to stay under the bed for always?"
"Janey, I am scared that if I come out you will scream and run away."
"Melissa, I don’t know if I will or not until I see you, if I run away it will mean you are a good monster, and if I don’t then it means I am not scared of you. Why not come out and let me see what I do?"
"Ok, but I won’t hold it against you if you run away, I know monsters are supposed to be scarey."
And so Melissa came out from under the bed. To Janey’s surprise she had 2 eyes and her teeth weren’t as bad as they could be. She was a greyish colour, and a bit shorter than Janey was. Her hair consisted of 5 greenish tufts which sprouted out of the sides and top of her head. Her arms and legs were small with surprisingly delicate hands and feet. She wasn’t scarey at all. In fact, as a monster she was a bit of a let down.
"Melissa, you aren’t scarey at all."
"I’m not?"
Janey thought that Melissa looked a lot like one of her classmates, "you just need somebody to dress you up and make you look prettier."
And so Melissa and Janey spent the afternoon playing dress up. Janey dug around in her cupboard amongst her old clothes, she found a pretty dress which would fit and a pair of her old Mary Jane shoes and some lacey socks. She rummaged around her hair clips and baubles for something to do with Melissa’s hair, she held up various items and pondered them with numerous hmmm’s and aaaah’s. Then she handed them over, "I will wait outside for a few minutes while you change, knock when you are ready."
Janey went downstairs and got some cookies and milk, she waited outside her room until there was a timid knock. Janey opened the door and found a transformed monster waiting for her. "Melissa? I can’t believe it, you look so pretty."
Clad in her party dress and shoes, Melissa looked nothing like a monster, in fact she could have passed as one of Janey’s wierder classmates if one looked past the green hair and her strange colour. Janey bustled around, trying out various clips and bows until she considered the transformation complete. "There you go, now, we must have some milk and cookies and play dollies."
And so the two girls spent the rest of the afternoon playing, they held a doll tea party, they read comics, they drew pictures and finally, exhausted they lay down on the floor staring at the ceiling. "Janey, thanks for a wonderful afternoon. I have to return to the monster place now. Just now somebody will miss me."
"But I will miss you too Melissa, will you ever come back?"
"I don’t know, sometimes monsters have to go places and we don’t always get to return unless we are very scarey."
"I understand. Can you at least write?"
"I will send you a monstergram, hows that?"
"Whats a monstergram??"
"Wait until it arrives Janey, its good fun."
"You can keep the clothing Melissa, its stuff mum wanted to give away anyway."
Melissa hugged her new friend, "thanks Janey, I will never forget what you did for me." Melissa explained to Janey that she had to close her eyes and count to 20 while she went back to the monster place."
Janey was sad, but faced the wall and counted "Goodbye Melissa. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Here I come, ready or not."
Her room was empty once again. Janey looked under the bed, only the dust bunnies remained, building their nest once again. She packed her toys sadly away, looking at the pictures that they drew, even finding one which Melissa had done of 2 figures standing next to each other. She wrote on the drawing "Melissa and Janey" and stuck it on her cupboard door with all her other drawings.
That night Janey was very sad, her parents even thought she was ill, they felt her forehead, asking what was wrong. But Janey couldn’t explain it, nobody would believe it anyway.
The monstergram was waiting for Janey when she got back from school one afternoon. It was in a green envelope and "To my friend Janey" was written on it in crayon.
Janey opened it and took out a piece of paper that was folded many times. There was a red circle on it with "push here" written underneath. Janey pushed.
The paper unfolded until it became like a small TV screen, Melissa appeared and she waved, "Hi Janey, I hope you are well. Thanks for the lovely afternoon, I will never forget it. I am now in a special monster school where they teach you how to be a good monster. I never knew that there was a place for good monsters. One day when I grow up I will become one of the monsters that has to go out there and sort out the bad ones. The school is near a lake and I am very happy. Oh, we even have a school uniform and homework and we go on outings and have lots of fun. I wish you were here though, because I miss you a lot. Look after yourself, and maybe one day I will meet you again." Melissa blew Janey a kiss and the image faded. The paper refolded itself once again.
Janey added the monstergram to her treasures, she was glad that Melissa had found happiness. Her parents however, were a bit concerned because every night Janey checked under her bed just in case there was a monster waiting for her.
