You should try the following:
1) Have your dinner at least 3 hrs before sleep time & avoid eating spicy food.
2) Avoid drinking coffee, tea, alchohal & cola after 6 pm.
3) Walking or excercise atleast thrice a week.
4) Avoid computer or TV 1 hrs before sleeping time.
5) Try reading a book, not suspense thrillers or horror !
6) Wash your feet with luke warm water before sleeping.
7) If there is lot of noise around your appartment switch on some instrumental music.
8) Check your bed if its comfortable.
9) Avoid thinking about any day to day life problems while waiting for sleep, the more you think, the more your sleep will get delayed. Try to focus your mind by imagining a milky white light entering in your brain through your 'third eye' (forehead).
10) If you are taking some medical drugs, ask the doctor if they create sleeplessness or anxiety.
11) Check if you are suffering from constipation, if so try to cure it.
12) There is a homoeopathic medicine, if you find it locally, its very good sleep inducer, without any side effects. Homoeopathic drug are known to create nil side effects as they are prepared naturally. The medicine is a mother tinture called: Passiflora incarnata (this medicine is made from passion flower/Maypop found in southern part of USA) and is well know sleep inducer.
13) Take a cup of warm milk with honey, before sleep.

I find what helps me fall asleep - often when I don't want to - is listening to music. Maybe a Blue Man Group CD? Not too loud but loud enough for you to hear. You then go to bed and relax.
And whatever you do, do not think about falling asleep. Clear your mind - but if you have to think about anything, make sure it's not about sleep. With me, the more I think about trying to get to sleep, the more I stay awake :-(
I don't know if this will help, but I hope it does :-)

Lavender Oil - either sprinkle a bit on your pillow case, or on a handkerchief - that will help relax you.
Keep a book by your bed for when you wake up, I can guarantee that will make you will fall asleep after a few pages.
Some people say that eating cheese before you go to bed will give you nightmares, but I've never had that problem.

Drink half a bottle of night nurse, "you'll miss out monday but come up smiling on Tuesday" (withnail) Also lie very still and try imagining your body being covered in first red, then orange, then yellow right through to violet, although by this time you will be cruising for a snoozing!! Something to do with light energy, worked for me when I was in hospital with creaky bed....

Something, deep inside the Psych, is bugging you. You need to deal with it. Analyze your dreams when you remember them. Figure out what each part may mean when applied to your daytime life. That and check your medicine cabinet; is there something you are taking that has sleep disturbances on it's list of side effects? Any stress can keep one awake!!
When you need to sleep, Just tell your body it's time to relax. Okay toes, time to relax. Ankles, feet...feel the sand btwn da toes, relax.....

Try reading or doing a relaxation exercise (meditation) before bedtime to relax you.
