Depending on what you believe in. If you believe in truth, then the truth will set you free. Opens your eyes. If you are led blindly to believe in something without any knowledge, then it will close your eyes. Religion like that will make you blind.

I think religion, when it is used properly, teaches us to look outside of ourselves. It teaches us restrictions, we cannot do whatever we want. We are bound by the rules of our religion. It can be a very insular thing - which is why I don't agree with organised religion - but it can also teach you about putting others first, responsibility, duty and kindness. Many people rubbish religion because it limits their behaviour or use it to give themselves a cloak of respectability. But true religion is doing good and putting aside the bad. I don't know how it can make you blind. There's a world out there so full of evil it is hard to miss it.

agree..... probably both - but old religion had the tendency to brainwash - these days people are much more open and it is much less harmful than years gone by - there are many many atrocities where religion is at the root..... which is very sad, but I'm sure religion like many other things is just used as a scape goat for certain people

It's all about perception. If it makes them happier then it's eye opening to them personally.
Opposition to the religion would regard them as having closed eyes.

I think it depends on the individual or group. Both happen to different people, it just depends on what they are looking for.

It makes people blind because they see only one road and that is the road they follow. They then only mix with like-minded people and stop being friends with those that don't think like them.

Cataracs make people blind. Opening your eyelids makes you open your eyes. Religion excuses mans' darker side, without him ever having to truly confront and deal with it, by externalising every internal mental process (the devil tempted me - WRONG, you just wanted to do it. God gave me this joy - WRONG, you felt joy as a result of biofeedback. I kill in the name of God - WRONG, you kill because you like it.).

Religion does cause blindness. Because they all rely on blind faith, none questioning.
If you question you dont believe. it is a nice little trap.
If you doubt it then you dont love your god.
