The best way to lose weight is of course a change in diet and lifestyle instead of pills. (not the fastest, but the most healthy way ;) )
But that doesn't answer the question, so here goes:
On this moment there are 2 diet pills that show the best effect with the least side-effects.
That are Xenical (orlistat) and Reductil (sibutramine)
Xenical makes sure that the fats in your diet are not absorbed, so your intake of calories is less. You can get a fat diarea and a deficientie of the fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K.
Reductill makes sure you'll feel less hunger, but you shouldn't take it late in the evening since it will give you a fit feeling. It can however raise bloodpressure and cause obstipation.
Now this is very important: you should ALWAYS consult a docter when you want to take pills! They have side-effects and there are rules in the use of them. A docter (should) know all about that.
You can use Xenical with a BMI of 30 or higher, or with a BMI of 28 with obesity related co-morbidities.
Xenical has to be used with a low-calorie diet and wont result in major weight losses (around 5% of your overweight).
Xenical works after 24-48 hours and will work for 48-72 hours.
Reductil can be used with a BMI of 30 or higher or with a BMI of 27 or hiher with obesity related co-morbidities. This can aslo be used combined with a weight-loss program (diet and physical activity). Just as Xenical will Reductil result in a weighloss of approximatly 5% of your overweight.
All the other diet pills do mor damage then god, so stay away from them.

Both Xenical & Reductil are safe. Whether they'll be effective for you is a different matter.
Reductil (the appetite supressant) did nothing for me at all. I think that's because I'm an emotional eater, not at hungry eater. I eat because I'm bored/annoyed/trying to concentrate, not because I'm actually hungry. So killing off my hunger pangs had nothing to do with the amount I eat!
Xenical does work. It stops the body absorbing around a third of the fat intake. The fat has to come out somewhere, so when you take Xenical you get very oily, erm 'number twos'. The loo looks like someone has poured neat oil into it.
When Xenical fails to work is when people (like me!) don't take it properly. If you eat more fat than usual, thinking Xencial will magic it away, you won't lose weight. (If you usually eat 30 grams of fat, you only absorb 20 grams with Xenical. If you push the boat out and eat 60 grams, you'll still absorb 40grms with Xenical.) Also your supposed to take Xenical with all meals, including low fat ones. Because Xenical is expensive I pick and choose what meal I take it with, thus poor results.
To have Xenical prescibed you need a BMI of 30+ (or 28+ if you have certain conditions). You can buy Xenical whatever your weight, but you may have to buy it off prescription.
The Boots pharmacy weight loss prescriptions are a complete rip off. It's a private GP service. They give you Xenical on prescription (so you have to be over BMI 30), but at private prescription rates. That means if you're UK Boots are charging you £150 for what you can get on the NHS for £7.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Best and safest pills will be 'Not to take any' pills. If your serious of losing some weight, you should go for some cardio exercises. example jogging. if your lazy to exercise, you can try controlling your diet. Eat less food with carbohydrates. Rice, noodles, spagetti, flour.

I agree with most answers - Do not take pills. If you think you need something to help you do this (cheaper also) take some fennel seeds (most supermarkets will sell them) put a sprinkling in a glass and pour hot water over them. Let the water cool down, drain out the seeds and drink. As you drink visualise yourself getting thinner! This will put you in the proper mindset and fennel seeds have been proven to limit the amount of fat taken into the body from your food.

The only weight loss pills you should consider are those that are prescribed by a GP (Xenical or Reductil) though even with these you have to keep to a balanced diet and exercise routine.
