Why are so many people on a mission to convert? Atheists determined to change Christians (don't seem to bother much with other religions) or Christians trying to convert atheists? Is it just that we all like to preach or prove a point? Is it that we have a need to feel superior?

It just all seems so obsessive. It must come up ten times a day!

Yes, you're right. I should have said "some atheists" and "some christians".

I'm not defending anyone, just curious. BTW - there have been lots of atheist wars. Even the WW was based on land grabbing, not religion.

Come off it! Paedophiles hide behind Christianity because it is a cover that gives them a respectable access to children. Not because Chrisitians are paedophiles. Child abuse was condemned by Christ and promised punishment.

Beaver - wash your mouth out with soap! No one is trying to convert you. I'm just trying to understand the aggression that is displayed by some people - like yourself. I didn't know people went around trying to convert others (besides JW's) and I canunderstand how annoying this must be. However I am still surprised at the level of antagnomism.

I'm agnostic and i think it's wrong to suggest that were are bothered about what you think, I'm kind and honest to people and that is all that matters, if people "find religion" and then are wonderful people then that is a good thing if they turn into extremist then obviously religion is not working for them. I have never tried to preach to someone about what i believe in and try to get them on my side, my best friend is a devoted christian and that's fine by me. We always have debates and point out our views on the history of the bible and how many times it has changed ect. but we aren't trying to convert eachother.

Talking of converting, if you bring up your children in a Christian, Jewish or what ever other religion then surely the parents are grooming/brain washing that child into having the same beliefs as the parent, rather than saying this is what i believe, this is what others believe but what you want to believe in is up to you.

Athiests don't knock on people's door trying to convert people. When are you believers going to wake up to modern day science? George Bush will not allow stem cell research in America because he's religeous and his religeon forbode this. What shite, forget trying to create a cure for cancer. And don't get me started on christianity, these religeous leaders can fiddle with kids, do what the fook they like, and they firmly believe if they repent their sins on their death bed, they can still get into heaven. We've been to sapce, there's no god up there!

I think it p*sses the Atheists off that if THEY'E right they don't get to say, "Told you so"! unless they are into Cryonics.

I am an Atheist and couldn't care less what anybody else believes in.

Everybody has the right to believe in what they want.

We are not having our son Christened as he should have the right to choose his own faith, we don't have the right to make that choice for him.

Atheists don't go blowing non Atheists up

Religious people only believe what they are brainwashed to believe. Atheists chose to believe what they want to believe.
We have freedom of choice. Religious people are shackled in chains (usually at war with another religion) I have never seen an atheist war have you? So Atheists are the most peaceful people on the planet. religious people are the most dangerous!

I think that as, on an individual level, it is such a fundamentally important decision people who feel differently to your own viewpoint feel the need to have you understand theirs. The difference between an atheist and a believer is such that they are simply unable to understand the others viewpoint. As an atheist I am unable to comprehend the concept of blind faith. I imagine a believer is unable to understand my inability to believe. Its a free world though - people can believe what they like.

Maybe that atheists are jealous of the religious? (I'm agnostic so this might seem a strange argument). They may think that the religous have fulfilled lives as they believe in something. Maybe they have something missing in their lives and have to knock those who seem to be happy with their lot in life.
As for those Christians trying to convert everyone else.. maybe they are concerned that not everyone feels as fulfiled as they are?
I think you have to be seriously unhappy with your lot in life if you are either

In a way u are right dude.....don't we all want to prove that "our" religion is superior than others...I think we can never get over this until & unless we understand what RELIGION really means....there are fundamentalists in all religions who don't have the basic knowledge of what "faith" means but they are ready to kill others if they don't follow their dictatorship....I guess the world is made like that...all of us have to prove ourselves & our believes before we leave this world forever.........................

I dont have a religion and I'm not really bothered about people who do. The thing that bugs me is when they come knocking on your door trying to sell you their religion. I dont go knocking on their doors telling them that god doesn't exist!.....Maybe I should start and see how they like it!

They are tterrified they just might be wrong in what they believe and the only way they can combat that is by attacking other people's belief's.
