I'm buying a DVD recorder that will upconvert to my HDTV for good picture quality short of having a true hi-def DVD recorder, which aren't yet available or at least at a reasonable price. Can current recorders pick up hi-def TV stations and record them standard definition? I'm worried that the recorder will be obsolete in 2 years when analog TV stations stop broadcasting.

First of all, the 2-year deadline is a joke. They keep pushing it back almost every year. Back in 2002, they originally said analog would be gone by 2005. In 2004, the date was sometime in 2007. Now the public has pretty much accepted that it won't be gone until every TV sold has HDTV capabilities. And for that to happen anytime soon, the prices needs to drop another 25-30%.

HDTV broadcasts can be down-converted to standard definition. There will be converters available on the market that can do the conversion (though many HDTV antennas will have it built in). Therefore, I wouldn't worry too much about your DVD Recorder becoming obsolete. DVD technology will be obsolete before your recorder is.

Yes your DVD recorder will record hi-def TV but should only be able to record in standard def. Your DVD recorder should not be obsolete in 3 yrs. You may or may not have difficulty in recording, that I am not sure for certain. One advantage you do have is that it is already digital. The most you would have to do is buy a different adapter or tuner to receive the signal. Why not ask your manufacturer of your DVD player? They should be able to give you a more definitive answer.

no, they need something to convert them down to standard def first, if you have it connected with SCART, S-Video or composite for recording this will be done at the source.
