Find a local play group or form one yourself. That way some other kids are playing with him and wearing him out. Plus it will allow you to talk to other Mom's going through the same thing. Also try and find new things everyday that will hold his attention that way he has to use his little noggin to concentrate on what is going on. Make some home made play dough one day.
Rubbery Play dough
2 cups baking soda
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cornstarch
Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over medium heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.
Nature's Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 T oil
2 T cream of tartar
beet, spinach, and carrot juice
Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the dough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the vegetable juices to make green, pink, and orange.
Play dough
4 cups flour
1/4 cup powdered tempera
1/4 cup salt
1 1/2 cups water
1 T oil
Mix together flour, powdered paint and salt.
There are ones that you can make with apple sauce as well. Go online and find sensory games to hold his attention. Putting him in the tub in his swim trunks with some shaving cream paints will blow his mind I can promise. Take several plastic cups and fill them with plain barbasol shaving cream it is the cheapest and works great. Then add a few drops of food coloring to each cup. Let him experiment with colors and see what mixing the colors does. Then take him and the newly made paints to the tub. He will have a great time and the shaving cream will clean you bathroom. :) This like every other stage of childhood will pass. :) Hang in there. Much Peace

Kindermusic classes go over well with my almost 3 yr old. He enjoyed them and we are now in a parent/tot swim class. If those types of things aren't options for you, I suggest finding other parents with kids your son's age for play dates.
Other things for him to do while at home with you are finger painting, Play-Doh, or even go out looking for larger rocks and let him paint a rock. It's hard to keep a 3 yr olds attention span on something for too long, but if you try some of these new things he may be interested for a longer time.
Good luck!!

Get him around other kids his age. Cars and dirt work well for my boys. Get a small kids pool and fill it with clean dirt (oxymoron) Give him some matchbox cars, maybe a front loader and a dump truck and let him have at it. Water added to the dirt also makes for great fun for boys.

Kids have short attention spans. Try sports or martial arts, reward him when he sticks with something for a long period of time.
