i can't count the number of times over the past 10 years that i've said to myself, "ok, today is the day. i'm turning over a new leaf and eating right, excercising, and losing those excess pounds". i must have said it literally hundreds of times, on hundreds of days.

sometimes i can keep it up for a few days, or weeks, or occasionally months. but i always fail and go back to my old ways eventually.

after looking at a fashion magazine, or watching a weight-loss show, or after seeing a beautiful woman on the street i always break out the "promise".

i am so tired of failing. i know i need to just gather up my willpower and do it.

all of you out there who have made it and changed your life (for the healthier)...how did you do it? what inspired you? how did you make it last?

Yes, I got interested in health and eating right early in college. I used to smoke cigarettes, drink tons of pop and eat sugary foods. I was extremely thin, in poor shape and my buddies sort of made fun of me because I couldn't run 1/4 of a mile without dropping to my knees panting for air.

At any rate, I started reading about health and eating right and made the decision to start taking care of myself. It took a little bit of time to drop the smokes, but I started ditching the sugary foods and fatty stuff.

Slowly, I got into lifting weights, in the hopes of getting bigger (WWF was big at the time). I also started running. I was pretty healthy until I lifted wrong and wrecked my back.

To make a long story short, I've made a few wrong turns on my path. However, these days I ran 25 - 30 miles a week, lift weights about 4 times a week. I can a half marathon on the drop of a dime and I race competitively on the weekends. My weight has remained perfect for my height for the past 10 years.

I am not a major calorie counter and I don't freak out too much if I eat junk once in a while. My blood work is fine and I have tons of energy. In the past 10 years or so, I've only had to take 5 - 7 sick days and the only time I visit the doctor is with a running injury.

I don't think it's a matter of will power. I think it's a matter of educating yourself. Once you realize how bad some foods are, you really naturally start to avoid them. That doesn't stop me from enjoying them once in a while, but I know when to say when.

It's definitely a lifestyle change. You just have to find what inspires you. The nice thing is my college buddies can't run a block, while I can run circles around them... so I guess I get the last laugh.

If you need tips, drop me a line.

Good luck.

When I was 14 I was 95 lbs and the weakest least athletic kid in school.I finally got tired of being picked on so I addressed the problem.I started lifting weights and eating right all f the time.I did as much reading on the subject as I could.I walked around every day remiding myself how much I didn't like my situation.I took a liking to lifting weights and made it part of my lifestyle.I would talk to people about it all of the time and share with them any results that I'd seen.I wish I had more room but try to make these changes a part of your life almost like a hobby.Make it part of who you are.People will start asking you what you've done and what they should do.It'll really help keep you in it.Not enough room to go on.

Since then, I have to eat low fat foods for the rest of my life. Well, let me tell you, it is hard. (As you know). But, I do have good news, Have you tried The South Beach Diet?? You can buy the meals at Wal-mart. They are truly great tasting. Since I have been discharged, I have already lost about 10 lbs. Give it a try. good luck.

When we categorize food to be "good" or "bad" then we categorize ourselves similarly.
Having a healthy body isn't a matter of "success" or "failure" but about balance. Stop watching those stupid weight loss shows and reading those horrible fashion magazines - they only depict some socially prescribed ideal that doesn't represent the human body.
