See these folks arent really answering the question... A helicopter can takeoff and land from ANY reasonable surface, or at least try it once. A helipad, is a designated landing area in a non-movement area within a controlled aerodrome. It can also be a designated landing area in a non-controlled area such as a hospital. It is characterized by a large painted "H", may have edge lighting and a wind sock. And dont let the guy above patronize you like that. HELICOPTER only has one "L". not HELLI... And an airplane doesnt land on a landing pad..It lands on a runway. I think a landing pad is what gymmnasts land on...

It is usually at a hospital and it is where the Helli copters land that come to bring in or carry out critical patients to another much more equipped hospital. I hope this answers your question. Not to be rude but, just to help you more and give you something to think about... Helli is part of the word helicopter and the word pad would be a designated area for it to land that is out of the way of traffic, usually in back of small hospitals and possibly on the roof of larger hospitals. I hope this clears this up for you and don't feel silly or dumb and "don't" let anyone else make you feel this way. We all have things we don't know the answers to, that's why we ask, so we will understand. That's okay, you'll keep learning this way, as we all do. Have a great day.The place where airplanes land is called the landing pad. Incase this looks funny to anyone else, it looks funny to me as well, but, I used spell checker just incase. So, unless it doesn't work correctly this is all spelled right. Maybe it isn't a big deal, but just incase, you never know who's reading this.

A helipad is aptly described as the "pad" where the helicopter lands, it does not matter if it is on a roof or in a field. Have a great day
