My friend has a pit and I have to say it's the nicest dog I've ever known. My friend had been working at the local shelter before it came under new managment. Back then, they used to cremate the animals they had euthanized. Part of her job at the shelter was to load the crematory, which from what I hear isn't pretty. So, they had euthanized this white female pit because she was vicious, and my friend was about to load her into the furnace. The dog was still alive. She took the dog to the vet. The dog slept for about 24 hours and has been the mascot for her animal rescue ever since. She gets along with any person and animal. She has even protected the house for a break in or two. As long as their owners treat these dogs well, they are a wonderful breed. .

It's fortunate that your dog was able to save the children. What did the media (local T.V. and radio) say when you reported this to them? Did they say they didn't have time for the story?
You are honorable for admitting you bought a pit bull for all the wrong reasons. Now that he has shown aggressive behavior, even though it was not directed at the children, do you think it is safe to let him be with the children without an adult supervising at all times? Your grand kids are lucky to have you for their grandfather. I imagine it would break your heart to have one of the children hurt by the dog that saved them. If you still believe it's okay to have the dog, it would be good if the children were taught how to handle the dog properly (be gentle, no pulling ears, tail, keep face away from the dog, no feeding scraps) such as throwing a ball for him etc. Maybe the ASPCA can give you ideas that would help. By the way, what is the hero dog's name?

My next door neighbor had a pit that was the best dog I've ever known. Seriously. He was 9 years old when we moved in a couple of years ago and when his owner told us he had a pit, we got nervous because we have 3 cats. So we all got together and the dog accepted us and our kitties as if we were family and always protected his turf and alerted us whenever somebody was sneaking around our yard too. And he was as gentle as a lamb to our cats. He died right after last Christmas and all of us miss him every day because he was such a great dog. He could scare the crap out of strangers and then turn around and come into my house and play. Pit bulls are very intelligent dogs and it's a shame when people raise them just to be mean because they're capable of so much more.

I see your question. To put it simply "who else has a story to tell about their bad ***, in a good way, pitt?" It's true, they have a bad rap, but it's all about how they're raised. It's sad that I can't take my staffordshire bull terrier (a low rider Pitt) to some camp sites and there's even places that wouldn't rent me a home with a dog that looks like mine. I had a neighbor's drunk friend walk into my house and sit down like he belonged. My mom was freaking out and I just told the guy that he had to go, we were getting ready for bed. He said "that's cool" and got ready to leave he went to pet Brick and my mom said "Be careful! He bites!" Brick rolled over and let the guy rub his belly. Dogs sense danger and they know when to be cool. just like raising a kid, they are what you make them. God bless pits and their families.

Pit Bulls aren't real good guard dogs because they love people, but they can easily discriminate between good intentions and bad intentions. I'm glad to hear a good story for once. And for everyone that thinks Pit Bulls are mean, they obviously never owned one.
