Check out this site:
http://www.whitby-hoteliers-catering-association.co.uk/
http://www.bedandbreakfasts-uk.co.uk/northeast-whitby.htm

You may want to give the Youth Hostel suggestion a miss, as I think they're still finishing up some redevelopment work on it at the moment

Things to see:
- Whitby Abbey
- St Mary's Church + Church Yard
- Ride on "Mary Anne Hepworth" (the old lifeboat)
- Lighthouse on the West Pier..... on certain days can go to the top for £1..... I took a video clip from there on Friday afternoon:
http://www.john-duck.co.uk/html/whitby_lighthouse_video.html

- North Yorkshire Moors Railway.... 20miles long, one of the leading Preserved Steam Railways in the UK
Includes GOATHLAND station along the way...... as used in the first 2 Harry Potter Movies + the village is also used in ITV series HEARTBEAT. http://www.nymr.demon.co.uk

- Whitby Museum http://www.durain.demon.co.uk

- 1/3rd scale replica of the HM BARK ENDEAVOUR (rides out to sea).

If here between 12th - 14th August 2006 there's the annual Whitby Regatta http://www.whitbyregatta.co.uk

- Botham's Bakery & Cafe
http://www.botham.co.uk

- The Village of Thornton-le-Dale (nr Pickering, about 20miles away) + the nearby Dalby Forest.

- The city of york is an easy day trip away

- Harry Collett's ghostwalks
http://www.whitbywalks.com/

- Sandsend Beach, Mulgrave Woods & Mulgrave Castle
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/don.burluraux/021200.htm

- About 5mins walk down the road from me is Ruswarp Pleasureboats.... rowing boats & canoes for hire.... cafe & golf course also available.

- If you're into Fishing, then Whitby is sort of like Yorkshire's equivalent of Florida's Islamorada, with Boat fishing for Cod + now Sharks also availble. There's some pretty decent fishing off the West Pier + near the Swing Bridge too...... looks like the Mackerel are close enough into shore to catch them from the Pier (according to Friday's local paper one of the local tourist boats, the "ESK BELLE II" has sighted Dolphins close in to shore after them).
There's also fishing for Salmon, Sea Trout & Brown Trout available on the River Esk (provided you've got the licenses) at Ruswarp, with permits available for Ruswarp Pleasure Boats. Even if you don't plan on Fishing, there's still some good bargains to be had from "Whitby Angling Supplies" on Haggersgate.

- The DRACULA EXPERIENCE on Marine Parade.

More info can be found on some of the guides I've added here:

Ok hi, I live about an hour away from Whitby. It's a great place.

First of all, there's plenty of quite cheap hotels in Whitby - the best thign to do to find one that's right for you would be to go to your local library and get the North yorkshire yellow pages - go through to the 'hotels' section and phone around. However, if you're family are quite young, or you have a smaller budget, Whitby has a youth hostel that sould be able to accommodate you cheaply and together as a family (www.yha.co.uk).

Sights to see are probably the Abbey on top of the cliff, theres a 199-step walk up there! Then there's the beach obviously - its; clean, free and fantastic to walk about in winter and lounge on in summer. The Dracula Experience is always good for a laugh - although not good if you're kids are very small - its might be obviously cheesy, plastic and crap but they'll probably still find it scary! Walking down to the end of the pier is always great too. Also worth a visit is the replica ship of Captain Cook's endeavour - think the Cutty Sark on a smaller scale.

There's loads of pubs and restaurants for all budgets in Whitby. The Magpie is the most famous - great fish and chips with a widely-known great reputation, so there's always a huge queue. There's loads of other places to eat though, so don't be disheartened by that. There's also lots of great shops in Whitby, lots of quirky individual ones as well as the main high-street shops. The Shepherds Purse cafe and shop is well worth a visit. hope that helps.

My biggest tip for Whitby would be to spend your time at the 'old side' on the little cobbled streets and not on the new side which has the amusements, etc.

There is a lovely little place just outside Whitby called Ruswarp where you can take a rowing boat on the river or play pitch and putt and crazy golf.

I'd also recommend spending a day on the moors doing a walk with a picnic.

If you're a Heartbeat fan Goathland is also nearby which is where it is filmed. Again, a very nice little village. You can also get on the black steam train here, the only one still running in Britain. It stops in lots of villages, most of which have very nice pubs serving even nicer food.

Other than that the usual sites - the abbey, whale bone, Endeavour, etc. If you've got kids they might like to get a little line and hook and catch crabs in the harbour.

Have you thought about the YHA - Youth Hostel Association. They are all over UK and welcome families. Smaller family rooms are available. They are sometimes a little out of the way and have a few practical rules that guest are required to adhere to and early curfews. However they are usually set in the most spectacular spots in exquisite old mansions or unusual buildings. And they are very, very affordable. Wonderfully interesting people and helpful, hospitable locals, replete with great info for exploring the surrounding region.

"Perched dramatically on the headland, YHA Whitby has panoramic views of the harbour, coastline and imposing abbey ruins."
