I'm not a girl but I think that, though they may like chocolates, it is the detail what counts the most. Giving chocolates is romantic, sweet, kind, --just what has been already said. But also it depends on the way you do it.
You know, it makes difference if you give them a chocolate bar than if you give them a heart-shaped- box with delicious chocolates in it (and if you add it a teddy bear or flowers, I think it's much better!). Specially coming from her loved one. It's not the same if her father gives her a chocolate than if her boyfriend does, just the way a kiss feels different coming from her dad or her boyfriend (of course, I don't mean they don't love their parents; the father's love is very important, but they need a boy to love them as well, it's just different love).
When you're giving chocolates to a girl you are actually meaning that you love her, and she's in your mind; and one way to show it is by giving them presents (and if it was a surprise, much better!). So there are more things beyond the chocolates in themselves.
Girls love to feel they're loved, and love those romantic surprises.

Well chocolate is a substitute for sex...it releases the same endorphins or whatever it's called. So a guy gives a girl chocolates because it sort of saying I want to have sex with you, but i respect you enough to wait so here's some chocolate so yo can get off indirectly. Love ya! ;)

I think it gives them the option of
1) accepting them and not feel guilty eating them cos its from my boyfren
2) eating them and later feeling guilty and then blame the boyfren for it
So in the end, its all about deluding themselves that they are innocent when it comes to eating chocolates given by their bfs..
