I see on wikipedia that Gibson attends an "independant traditionalist catholic church". Is that all legit with the mainstream RC church?

The independent traditionalist Catholic Church that Mr. Gibson attends has broken away from the mainstream Catholic Church.

I believe it does not recognize the changes from Vatican II Council like saying Mass in the language of the people instead of Latin.

With love in Christ.

It's a legitimate part of the Catholic church, just not very common anymore. The service is said in Latin as was done about 50 years ago.
