Well, find them when they are in a good mood. Start off by sighing and then say that you didn't get a passing grade on your exam. Because they are in a good mood, they shouldn't think its the end of the world. And since they went to school and should know what its like to fail and how they would have hated for their folks to have freaked out on them, they shouldn't be too bad. And also, if you can retake the exam, then tell them that you failed, BUT you are redoing it. And that you will study harder and do your best to make them proud of you. Thats what I do.

Just show your disappointment when you tell them and I am sure they will be fine. Parents are usually a lot cooler about these things then you think they will be.
If they get angry then say that you know it was all your own fault but you are willing to take responsibility for it and will try really hard this time. Or something like that because it shows you are mature.
