presumably by the synoptic problem, you are referring to the fact that the first three gospels do not always correspond. Source criticism is important, as it enables one to chart the similarities, seeing how both Matthew and Luke derive from Mark, and is the basis for the theory of the "Q" gospel, which both Matthew and Luke also seem to have drawn from.
