I get the same feeling sometimes. Maybe it's because the USA is sich a big country and has therefore been a bit selfcentered throughout the years. Being only interested in your own state / country and fellow citizens is not a great starting point for being curious for other things and people. And curiosity is exactly the basis of a will to learn.
There are also very little Americans who speek other languages than American English. This makes it difficult to really connect with other cultures. As a Flemish girl in Belgium it's normal for me to speak Dutch, French, English and a bit of German. I also noticed that in Western Europe it is really normal to do college or higher education after highschool. Education is also far more democratic here. It doesn't cost a fortune to go to college, but on the other hand you won't pass a year because you're a good football player. Last but not least, the re-election of the pres really didn't put up a great image of the general level of education of the Americans... too bad.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of eductated, smart, open-minded Americans but they all seem to live in NYC :-)

I am an american, and i have to say that a lot of people are somewhat uneducated. In my personal opinion, the government needs to pay more attention to education, because I'm a high school student, and the school standards just aren't very high. People try to act like America is SO great, which it is, but it also lacking in a few areas.

You're probably not talking to people from the West Coast or the North East. After living on the East Coast and the midwest, and visiting the South, It seems as if education travels to "Blue" states. Just an observation, not a political comment. Education in America is not spread out, it is concentrated in few, but dense areas.

I have to agree to some posted comments in here, I am foreign and its not the education, education or manners start at home and it all depends on ourselves. This is the land of opportunity and anyone can make it and be what they want to be, all we need to do is be nice and release our ego's. Yes some woman are smarter than man, but man take your role if married and have kids, be the hero that resues the damsel in distress and that is the answer to your question why, but americans are not educated just busy working for the man when their kids now 20 and 30 were growing up. Man need to stop thinking of down there and take up responsibilities for once to free the woman from working.

It is sad to say, but this statement is more true than you can imagine. One third of high school kids drop out, and one half of those that graduate, cannot read on a high school level. Our society would rather push them through school, then deal with reality. And while I am American, I work for a major airline, in Miami, we have people from 71 countries working there, and Americans are ignorant of the rest of the world.

Too much politics, and not enough of doing the right things!!

It seems most of them are working and spend their free time online doing remedial tasks like checking emails or watching tv and renting movies. Night life consists of drunken weekends. Not a lot of room for higher education or the pursuit of knowledge in their schedules. Education may mean something else to them though. A full life with strength from trials may be enough. If we are stupid - Oh well. At least we're too stupid to recognize it.

the honest to god answer is you are right and even bill gates is busy pointing this out as a national problem in the making.the schools are almost ready to be torn down and the dropout rate goes higher.my solution to this problem is simple.America must create a giant works program, employing millions to not only maintain/rebuild schools, but also rebuild the city of new Orleans by shipping in quarried rock to a height of at least one hundred feet above sea level and rebuild the city.Franklin d. Roosevelt would have.Dan

Funny you. Watch the news; you can see who has a space program, the most powerful military in the world, the strongest economy, the best Universities, thousands of Nuclear Weapons, the cleanest cities, the best Olympic athletes, the most advanced satellites and the most prominent political figures in the world. We are smarter than you; sorry.

Judging by your name Chriztina, you are probably from Poland or elsewhere in Eastern Europe.I think your view may be biased in favour of the education you received. Most Americans are educated, but in the stuff that matters to them.Eastern European education is of a high standard but will not help you in getting on in the modern commercial world as much as it would if you had been educated in US.

Because you're an arrogant, immature, jerk.

EDIT: "ftlbear" wrote: "One third of high school kids drop out, and one half of those that graduate, cannot read on a high school level."

This is blatant disinformation and lies. Please refrain from spouting random facts you just made up. The American drop out rate is no more than 10% (there's a lot of different sources but just use google if you're interested) and your second "fact" seems to just have come out of your @ss. I don't know what the actual percentage is but I guarantee you it's not 50% so please don't just make up random percents.

Remember folks, 73% of facts are made up on the spot.
