They dont have to teach religion but they can at least teach about the reason for the turn from BC - AD

The reason why Jesus isn't a historical figure talked about in school is because they want school to be as free of any sort of religion as they possibly can and usually the first thing that pops in anyone's head when Jesus is mentioned is religion and why he was killed.
Besides, what would happen if a child asks an imappropiate question during the class on purpose or by accident and offens other students without trying to?
There are lots of people that would take such things to court because religion is very important to them and some are easily offended.
It's sad that they don't and that people just can't learn to be accepting of other people's differences and religions, but this is for the best.

He wasnt a real person, so he isnt in school history classes for the same reason Sherlock Holmes isnt.

Uh ... we DO teach the distinction between B.C. and A.D.

And for those who haven't learned yet ... A.D. doesn't stand for "After Death" ... Jesus didn't die the day he was born.

Sorry..have to be a bit more subtle than that. Or even better...keep your religion(EVERY religion) out of public schools
