Not sure there is one. Saying "fast food" is one answer, but it's a depressing one.

Americans are quite attached to their local food identities, though. If you ever go there, stay the hell away from fast food and try whatever the local favourite is:

- grilled clams and clam chowder in New England

- conch fritters in the Keys

- gumbo in N'awlins

- BBQ in Texas

- chili'd everything in New Mexico (if they ask "red or green", say "Christmas" for both)

- fusion food in California

- the legendary Katz's pastrami sandwich in NYC (share with a friend)...

- applets and cotlets in Seattle

Only two places you should ever eat burgers:
- Hamburger Mary's in San Francisco (biggest, gayest, happiest, tastiest burgers in the world)
- In-N-Out Burger (CA only: everything handmade on each premises with local ingredients, and a quantum leap away from the McDo)

The only one that has ever been officially brought to congress is Chili. However I would make the arguement that a certain amout of formality and celebration goes into a national food. We, as a nation, spend a day in late november where almost everyone in the country sits down to the same turkey dinner. I believe that the Thanksgiving meal would have to be our national dish.

at first i would say the hamburger, however, the name is devrived from hamburg germany.
so, next i move to hotdog, which is good, but hot dog is a sausage (not too ameican if u ask me), called a frankfruter, after the town in germany, once again. so, i would say,

possibly steak, but waht about maybe good old fasion ribs, or maybe just BBQ in genreal, or fried chicken? (haha african food?)

It used to be fried chicken or roast beef with mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn, with apple pie dessert....Today it's probably a triple burger with humungus fries and a milk shake (forget the veges).
