I'm an exarmy disable vet and I think that we should give them a chance to give back to society, by sending them to Iraq to become a true american agian. The army training would also be good for them. Just my opinion, what do you think.

I think that's a good idea except that the NAACP and the ACLU would be SCREAMING about how unfair it is.

Everyone has already touched on very valid points. Most notably, the last answer about the military screening the soldiers they have now. There are female soldiers getting raped by male soldiers- frequently. There are convicts in Congress, there are convicts in your neighborhood, they just haven't been caught. It should be a choice- if a convict chooses to serve this country- that doesn't give a crap about them. Haven't you ever made a mistake, and wanted to make up for it? I think there aren't just evil people in prison. Anyway- I think the reason they don't allow it , is like someone else mentioned - they might turn and shoot you in the face.

I think it is a bad idea to allow every convict. Being in the military requires discipline and a respect for the rule of law, things that are lacking in convicted criminals. It will also reflect poorly on the international stage. How would you feel about a country's military if many of their members were convicted criminals. In addition, the military might be a good place for drug dealers to make good money. I'm not saying that all convicts should be barred from the military, but one needs to consider the needs of the military first. It should be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This is a very good question. I've also wondered this same thing. When convicted criminals go to prison they are given more perks than the average working man. (I'm a woman). They are seen I guess as worthless human beings. When our servicemen fight in war they get nothing in return. This government seems to be backward. Convicts should be able to be trained to go to war after all they obviously like killing, and being the big man on the totem pole. I agree that they should give back to society instead of always taking from it. Who would be in charge in the gov. to consider this? I bet my bottom dollar if convicts knew they might have to fight in war their would be alot less crime. I wish I could afford to get my teeth fixed, watch tv all day, and have access to the internet. America is way to lenient on criminals. They get the best, and hardworking citizens get the boot.

In order to be an effective soldier, you have to be capable of taking discipline and following orders. Generally convicts cant do this, which is why they are convicts. There is also the fact that most convicts have problems with drugs and alcohol, and are generally unhealthy and into self destructive lifestyles. There have been attempts in the past to rehabilitate criminals in other countries by pushing them into the front lines, notably the 999 unit which fought the Americans in 1943, they were completely destroyed.

We don't have enough criminals, murderers and rapist mixed into the ranks of the military already? I think the military should be screened better then it is with psychiatric tests to assure that only mentally sound individuals be sent into such sensitive and often volatile conditions with such potential for abuse.

Send a convicted drug dealer into an area overseas known for drug production or smuggling.

Give a convicted rapist or child molester a gun and send him into a residential neighborhood on patrols.

Send a convicted murderer into an area where distinguishing enemy from friendly is a subtle endeavor.

What do you think you will have gained?

Our military are supposed to be our best and our finest, not the dregs of society.

Not a good option. The majority of those in prison did not get there by being innocent. If you cannot count of these people to follow the rules of society, you cannot count on them to follow the rules of combat. If you are in a war situation, you want to be able to trust that your co-military personnel will cover your back at all times.

If you really believe and think convicts are not allowed in a combat, you are mistaking. A friend of mine is killed by two robberies who were robbing at the time a Taco Shop where my friend was eating, the two suspect es were Marines, they were locals, and were heading to Iraq within two weeks. They were NEVER arrested. In fact, I watched them driving to their base. I am not making up this story.

The British did this in Ireland with the balck and tans, the portuguese did this in Mozambique. The results were the same, they convicts acted like criminals rather than soldiers - stealing, raping, torturing...

It's a really, really bad idea.

I agree with you but I also think they should be the men and women on the front lines in harms way first off instead of deploying these mothers and fathers that are the sole providers for there families. Let serving in these wars be part of their time they serve for the crimes they have commited.

I am just guessing that you had a head wound. Why would you want to give a bunch of criminals weapons and let them lose. Even if they did not all desert or frag you as soon as they could, what are you going to do with thousands of armed and trained gangsters when their time is up.
