Thread count in any fabric tells how many threads are in a piece of fabric per square inch. The higher the thread count the higher quality the fabric; which of course means it will stand up longer to every day use and washings. A higher thread count also offers a stronger resistant to staining and tearing. Anything that boasts Egyptian cotton is going to be a higher thread count and of better quality; Egyptian cotton is re guarded as the best cotton on the market.
www.amazon.com sells Egyptian cotton sheets and comforters, any order more than $25 qualifies for free shipping, and they are currently on sale..I just ordered a set.
When shopping for sheets I recommend 240-360; you'll find that they're reasonably priced and good quality.

Literally more pieces of thread per square inch, which makes the fabric feel softer to the touch.
