I suggest to uninstall the MSN messenger. Try the new one which named Windows Live Messenger. It's good for hotmail users and also you can add your friends which has yahoo email.

Good Luck !!!!

Disable Windows Messenger System: Are you receiving pop-up ads even when you are not connected to the Web (even if you are running anti-spyware programs)? Then you are being spammed by a different type of pop-up ad that can not be blocked by anti-spyware programs (anti-spyware programs block Web pages from popping up unbidden). In this case spammers are using the Windows Messenger Service.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that Windows users should disable Messenger Service to prevent unscrupulous marketers from filling their screen with unwanted ads.
Windows Messenger is part of Windows XP and has nothing to do with the traditional instant messaging.

To disable Messenger Service:
Click Start, Control Panel. Click on Performance and Maintenance (in Category view)
Click on Administrative Tools
(In Classic view: Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools)
Double-click on the Services icon and then scroll down to Messenger
Right-click on Messenger and click Properties
On the General tab, click the Stop button
Click the down arrow in the Startup type drop-down list box and click Disable
Click OK

Messenger Service cannot be disabled in Windows 98 or ME.

I assume that you are online since you wrote this. That usually means that 1. you have the wrong user/password in the messanger setup 2. you have internet access that has blocked messanger or 3. there is a firewall rule that is blocking messanger.

well first check that the password and username are correct, then check if there's not a fire wall preventing the program from accessing the internet. if these arent the case then uninstall and install the latest version compatible with your computer.
goodluck
