Training your dog. With my normal dog, training her for obedience, tricks, Frisbee, retrieving and agility was happy bonding time. With my fearful, submissive wetting rescue puppy, training was way difficult and though necessary, did not really cause bonding, due to the wetting and running to hide all the time. He did learn basic obedience and tricks, and slowly improved a bit, but I was tolerating him; not enjoying him like the first dog. I didn't think he liked agility, because he wouldn't do this with me at home and he wouldn't (still won't) play with toys with me. I finally took him to an agility class, saying I already trained him, I don't think he likes it, but I'm still trying to find a way to bond with this crazy dog. He loved it, and was instantly moved to competition level and just as instantly earned titles by his second trial. So, agility is fun with a normal dog and especially good for a troubled dog!

You have to spend quality time w it & give it lots of love and attention. Also you must be sure to properly train your dog to behave & have manners. You have to prove that you are the alpha(in charge) in your household, this not only bonds your dog to you but makes for a much happier home. Also proving your dominance over your dog teaches it respect & will in the long run keep your dog loyal & protective...and I didnt say aggressive I said protective.

Physical contact. Dogs are like people, social beasts. reassuring affection by petting is the best way to create that social bond.

You have to give your dog lots of love and attention.. the way i did that was give my dogs lots of walks, groom him often, play with him, and at the end of the day give him a massage all over before heading to bed. But because you want your dog to understand that he can't have his way all the time.. you have to train him and discipline him too. He has to learn that you are in charge (the aplha dog) and that you won't toletrate misbehavior.

Watch the Jim Belushi movie "K-9", there is a part where Jim gets an explanation on how to do all that, besides being educational, it is funny too.

By teaching it him/her things...dogs bond with their masters, if the master is kind, and teaches it basic manners first, and then something new each week. Dogs love to please , and they love to learn.
Stroke it over the eyes to help it to trust you. That is like Mommy washing its face.
