wow! that's the first positive, pro-american thing i've heard from a canadian.. and i have very close canadian friends!
i am of the opinion that patriotism is rooted in the experience of seeing our predecessors make something of themselves, and knowing that we have that same opportunity as americans.
it is a great country. so much hope. and i truly do not believe that the core of america possesses any sense of global superiority. like anyone else, we'd like peace, prosperity, and security.
america is also in the middle of a fight. i think most of america feels a bit under "siege". the global terrorism problem really gets the hackles up on most americans. and, as you know, america has never been afraid of a fight!
i really like canadians. the nicest, most thoughtful, well-spoken, and educated people to be around.
canada is a great friend to america. i hope that our two governments will always remember that we're far better together than we are apart.

What a good question. There is something so free and good at the heart of the true America. It's fresh and strong and noble. Granted, we do not always exhibit those qualities. But it's the idea, the foundation of how we were created. Free, just, courageous, generous. I think the people of this nation have all these characteristics. They are full of imagination and innovation, when terrible things happen (like 9/11), see how they respond. Full of compassion, they will give everything they have to help those in need.
Although I would be the first to say we fall short in many ways, the backbone of America has in it the finest, most noble aspirations. Our nation was built on freedom and justice for all. Is this always the case? No. But it's the heart of our country. I also believe we are "one country under God". Looking to Him for guidance and wisdom, we truly are a blessed nation.

American's have an unfailing sense of patriotism because they are living in the only cilivised free country in the whole wide world. Didn't you know that? USA USA USA High Five etc etc Yawn.
Patriotism is an explanation for the suspension of the instinct for self-preservation, which implies that all humans would avoid a battlefield - hence the patriotism inspired in Americans by their leaders so they can ship them off to countries which have nothing to do with them to kill, be killed, maim and generally cause further strife

Listen we have to be....from the time we started this country we have been invaded by immigrants. First from Ellis Island now from the Mexican border. We have SOOOO many nationalities in this country that the only way to keep it alive and strong is to recruit these foreigners into believing WE are thee best nation out there.....because really think about.....we're the only ones that will except your sorry asses in! So you better make the best of it....and the way you show the government your appreciation for excepting you into a country...while just about every other country threw you out of theirs...... is your undying loyalty and the willing to fight for no matter the cause. Sort of like making a deal with the devil. LOL
And not to get onto the subject...sorry...of this whole Mexican immigration thing, but the reason why the American's that have been her for the last 100 yrs are pissed off isn't because they are immigrants (because we all are), but it's the fact that our ancestors worked their fingers to bone to give us a better education and MADE us learn the English language and taught us to "play the game". Like the old saying goes, "When in Rome act like a Roman." How befitting considering we based our government off of the Romans. ***Sorry I really didn't want to bring that up!***** It would behoove the Mexican immagrants to do the same instead of saying they are going to "invade" by population and take us over....BTW I am quoting a LA latina political figure.
So the way I look at it....we should start migrating to Canada! LOL Would you accept our sorry asses?!

Actually, doesn't the term "God and Country" come from the British? Just wondering. As to why are Americans so vociferously patriotic, it would appear to come from a blind, sometimes wreckless, optimism that this country will prevail in all matters and that, in the long term, be found right. This kind of jingoism is a bit scary at times, but also quite moving at others.

To many Americans, God and country are one and the same. It's strange. They see the USA as a God-given country where Christianity won over the heathen savagery of the native people.
They also have the "football" mentality of pride in your team because it wins. World War II is still a big reason that Americans have so much patriotism, and so is the Cold War. We beat the Nazis, and then we beat the Soviet Union.
The USA's history is a history of religion and war. Many Americans are still war-loving religious nuts. But not me. I understand that religion and patriotism are CAUSES of conflict, not solutions.

You are making the assumption that Americans are more patriotic than any other country but that's not true. Americans share a similar culture with Canadians and Mexicans, it's just that we're under international scrutiny right now, and it's a basic human reaction to cling to the hope that we are right and proclaim it to be true in hopes of convincing others.

We have a lot of trouble, but that is what makes us stick together. After 9/11 happened it was so great to see everyone sticking together and showing their patriotism...we are proud because we have so much freedom here and will die to preserve it. If you read our history you will see all the sacrifices that were made to get where we are today. God Bless America!

I sort of think of our patriotism like this.
Do you have a little brother or sister? You might push your little brother around, call him names, give him a hard time... but you wouldn't let anyone else do it.
So I kind of think of my country that way, I don't like it all that much... but I won't let anyone bash it. I might be talking to my friends about how our country is such a mess, but if someone from another country joined in, I might sound more patriotic.
I still won't defend GWB. That guy could be the anti-christ.

It is taught in schools. Social Studies textbooks, especially in elementary schools address it. We teach the kids a lot of patriotic songs and generally teach them to love America and flag waving.
But I like Nurses4evers answer too. We do kind of feel that the rest of the world is tired of us and I do see people refer to us as arrogant and fat and...so we only have each other.
