Well, people pray for many different reasons. I'm sure that there are people that pray on gambling, but that is very selfish for the most part. I can give you many reasons for praying, but the list would just keep going on and on. People even pray for medical reasons. Scientific research has proved that praying for people drastically increase the chances of a person getting better. Moral of the story, everybody should start praying to God, even you.

OK question back at ya when you wrote this question did a box pop up letting you know that this is a repeat of very similar questions(actually about once a week I think).
I know I've answered this twice.
OK short version. Lots of things but it all boils down to this I talk over almost everything to my One and Only Best Friend in the Universe. I complain to Him(He has very broad shoulders, the broadest) and rejoice with Him, share all the good times and the bad with Him. That's what I call Prayer.

see that's the thing. obviously you are not a religious person with the fantasy entity quote. if you didnt know, praying is not always about wishing for something or even being forgiven. yes, it can be any sometimes it is. but prayer is like a talk with God. special time. sometimes you dont even ask for those things. you just have time with him. if anything, prayer should not be for the things you stated above. it should be for yes, forgiveness, a closer walk with God, to be more humbling, for guidance, whatever your sermon was on, whatever your mind chooses to meditate on, and etc. etc.
people do wish for the things you mentioned, but again religion says He has a plan. whatever happens happens because it is decided already. so hoping for earthly things like that is useless.
just seeing it from a religious viewpoint.

Why is it important that you know? ARe you saying I'm not sincere in my prayer? ARe you saying that I'm part of some problem you believe to be true? Are you thinking that if I stop praying the world will somehow get better? What do you think will happen? Don't you wish that you could just say something in the middle of nowhere, and that your wish comes true? What kind of unimaginative primate are you? Man, you are such a downer.

What do you talk about when you are with your dad? What do you hope to achieve by talking about those things? You don't ever assume you are talking to some imaginary fantasy entity, do you?
It seems like you have been praying to some imaginary fantasy entity so far (if at all you did!). Only a child knows what it means to be with his/her dad and to talk with him.

I do not pray in the hopes of achieving anything much. I pray for faith because my own waivers, I pray for forgiveness for being a hypocrite. I pray for forgiveness for my doubts and loss of faith. I pray for forgiveness for the 'bad' things that i do. I pray for the strength i do not have, i pray for the well being of the people i love and care about. I pray for the people who are having a hard time in their lives. I pray for my bf who thinks religious people are misguided. I pray for forgiveness for agreeing with him at times. What is it that i really want that I imagine god will God will give me? I want for him to not give up on me the way i feel i give up on him. I pray for him to watch out for my eternal soul because i think im doing a lousy job of it. And i pray for an understanding of all the questions that plague me about religion and spirituality

I pray for many things; peace, hope, help for friends having problems; world crises; situations that I come across that grieve me but I am not involved (passing by auto accidents; weary Mothers with screaming kids in grocery stores, etc), world leaders, co-workers & their lives; for my own issues & a right heart in dealing with them!
There is much to be gained by developing a prayerful life. I'm still working on developing mine, but I must say...G-d has surpassed my expectations.

I pray that your heart be open to the truth. I pray that you are not hurting or abused by love ones. I pray that your finances be blessed. I pray that your neighbors be your friend in the time of trouble. I pray that your children be open minded towards religion and believers. I pray that your health be prosperous and without disease. I pray that the world will see good in your character on a daily basis. I pray that love will increase in your life towards every believer. I pray that your beliefs be respect. I love you and Jesus love you. My heart cries out for you and I will continue to pray for you daily. Amen

God's will, which is always best.- Not my own.
Specifically, blessings and protection for my loved ones.
Wisdom for myself - to be loving and a good husband and Father, and God's help to do that.
As for church - earth is not heaven but some of heaven comes down at church.
Not a fantasy - The living God alive in my heart, and giving me an abundant life of peace and purpose.
You cannot pray for the forgiveness of others, they must come to the Lord themselves, but I often ask that God would move in their lives for that to happen.
God is evident and working in my life each day, and in yours too - but you have to see it yourself.

Well, despite your negation of your own question, "Imaginary, fantasy entity" ...I pray as a recognition of my inability to change self (at times) and other (always). To pray is to admit my inability to do-life-on-my-own. Not as a weakness but a wise recognition of my limitations and my belief (despite your nay-saying) in a loving, creator who awaits response to the invitation for relationship with each person. As to the efficacy of prayer, only God knows!
