You bet you can! Trader Joe's has the best Sockeye Salmon frozen from Alaska every day fpr $7.99 a pound! And I don't even work for Trader Joes, I just buy it all the time and so do other people because they can't keep it in stock. Anyway, the best way to freeze salmon at home is to freeze it in a Foodsaver machine (any of the models will do - I have the cheapest one and it works so well). If you don't have one of those, then get the Ziplock double guard freezer bags and put the salmon in them and squeeze all the air out of them that you can. They will last quite some time in the freezer(especially wild salmon, which has a firmer texture). Hope this helps!

The best way to freeze whole salmon or fillets is to glaze it first. On commercial freezer boat they employ a method called 'blast freezing'. The salmon is dipped in a sugar water solution, put on metal plates and blast frozen. A blast freezer has super cold air running over the aluminum plates and freezes the fish in about 1/2 hour. At home, buttermilk is a good solution, regular milk can be used as well. Dip the fish, put on a cookie sheet in the freezer. When frozen dip again. 3-4 layers and you will have a nice glaze. The fat content in the milk, and the thickness of it helps seal the fish. You can use the sugar water method but it doesn't work as well due to the fact most home freezers don't get cold enough to freeze the fish fast enough before most of the water runs off. I spent 10 yrs. living and commercial fishing in Alaska and this is what I did at home.

Oh of course! I live in Alaska and freeze 200-300lbs of salmon a year! I went down and bought a Food Saver with lots of Food Saver baggies. It works great! I can't tell you how thrilled I am with it.
Canning salmon is a good idea also.

Whenever you freeze fresh fish, you get a loss of quality in the texture and taste once it'd defrosted. It's far better fresh, but if you must freeze them, a deep freeze that freezes very quickly is best.

as long as they're fresh and not frozen.but double wrap them in plastic and let them defrost. Actually salmon is best eaten fresh and not fresh frozen. You might as well get already frozen. I've tryed both ways so I know.

Salmon is a fatty fish. First, you have to know that there are 2 groups of fish (in terms of fats). One is the lean fish group (cod, sole, etc.and the other the fatty fish group. Fatty fish group (mackerel, salmon, etc. refers to fish with higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3). On the cardiac benefits, of course, fatty fish are better.
Lean fish can be kept for longer periods in the freezer (-18C), upto 6 months.
However, fatty fish can only be kept for very short periods in the freezer, upto 3 days. However, fatty fish can be kept @ -30C for up to 6 months.
Please do take note that you can only freeze fish that are fresh and the quality is still good. If you freeze fish that is already deteriorating, the condition will only worsen when you thaw it.
Hope I have helped.

The best way to freeze fish is to put water in the zip lock with the fish. That way they keep that fresh fish taste better when you thaw them out.
