go for a smaller car with engine no bigger than 1.6L. You will find some Suzuki swifts a decent petrol saver along with smaller mazdas.

Older cars tend to gulp down more petrol though, compared to the new generation of cars. Most of the todays small cars that are being released into the market this year tend to get 1000Km's out of the petrol tank due to the turbo diesel engine, and alternative fuels such as the hybrid Honda engine found in the new Civic.
As stated go for nothing more than 1.6 when you get an older car, make sure you service it regularly as this will give you more out of your petrol tank as well.

RE: Is it possible to increase mileage on new car-2006 Nissan Murano only gets 17-18 mpg-highway? In city, it's only getting as low as 7mpg up to 12 (it has a monitor that gives averages), and highway, it's gone up to 19. The sales stats say it should avg 25mpg. My 87 Honda
Accord, gives me 35 mpg, and has power everything, sattelite radio, automatic trans, and is a 4 door, what more could you ask.

I can ride the Honda cheaper than the Harley which get 45 mpg but does not have the comfort , nor will it run on 87 Octane.

I got a ride to work last week from one of my co workers. He has two Geo Metros one gets 45mpg the other 50mpg. He drives 100 miles round trip to work for six dollars a day.

Thats $1560 dollars a year.
At 20mpg which my trucks gets its $3900 a year
Even if you could get 35mpg you would have to pay almost $2340 a year. ( Based on $3.00 a gallon ,five days a week for 100 miles a day)

An older Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. You're not going to get a heck of a lot for that $$$.
