There are likely quite a few atheistic Muslims, but I would image that they would be difficult to find! In shar'ia (their legal code based on the Koran), leaving Islam is punishable by death. Mostly likely, they would keep quiet about it. Very quiet.

The one who revert back or change to athiest after being a muslim is the one who did not study his religion properly (i.e. from Quran and Sunnah and they belong to either of these two types:
1-who has been mistreated by his fellow men/woman who practise thier traditions more than they practise Islam. He is the one who has been brought up under a family who are muslims by name, so he does not see much differences between a muslim, christian or jew other than some worships and their books. for example you may see some muslim scholars in India who say in public that dowry taking from women is not a Islamic practice, but when it comes to his daughters wedding he gives dowry or his son asks dowry by which they are following a Hindu tradition, not the Islamic practise. so the daughter or the wife of his son will logicaly think that thier is no fair in Islam. They blame the religion instead of blaming the man who is not practising Islam as it owe to be.
2- Who have converted to Islam for some simple reasons like marraige, getting a job, spying, gaining some position or benifits in life. They did not convert to Islam after reading and finding the difference. so once their need is not fulfilled/or fulifilled then they would certaily leave Islam easily same as they entered.
so it is very difficult for a muslim who has tasted the fruit of Islam to retun back to darkness after he has seen the light, how can a person who have found answers to all his question go back to his previous life and keep on asking?! Therefore, you find the number of converts back to atheist/christian/jew are very very less compared to those who conver to Islam.
As for the punishemnt to those who leave Islam. All muslims see it is reasonable, becuase Islam is not a religion where you can come and go as you wish, it was not forced on him to accept Islam, he had the right to read, find out, he had the choice, changing religion is not a game nor should it be done for simple reasons. You are making the choice of your life, then how can you come and go as you wish, didn't he know who created him, didn't Allah show him the right & wrong? didn't he know that he owe all his blessings in this life to him, then after he get what he wants he bites on the hand which feeded him!
Also there are who converts for the reason of spying, which certaily would not be accepted by any religion. so certaily they will kill the spy. and those who do this give chances to others to do the same or to slam Islam by saying it has no freedom of choice, while the choice was already there in front of him.
"Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah.-while all creatures in the heavens and on earth have, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (Accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back. Quran 3:83

Maybe most muslims dont live long enough to convert. Its hard to think about converting when your either protesting the West, strapping a bomb to yourself, or getting a regular stomping from the Israelies. Any other free time is filled with hate for others, I dont think they get much time to think about being an atheist.

the one who become atheist has never never been a muslim. A muslim never and under no circumstance chenges his faith , cuz Islam is really different and it really changes all of thought and ideas and gives u a new way of life. it really IS the best religion.

In the countries under Sharia Law, admitting you have given up the faith is a death sentence. I don't think you are going to get an answer here.

If you get punished by death for leaving a faith, that's called religious oppression.

Do not denounce Allah who has breathed life into you and love you all your life. You will regret it for the rest of your life and I am saying this because i love you.
