go to a chiropractor that specializes in flexion and distraction (a specific technique). This can help to alleviate some of the symptoms and give you better back health. surgery isn't an option that i would choose, and their is a high incidence with failure with back surgery. Get a rehab protocol, and get some treatment. Check out some research too... their is plenty out there on low back pain, disc syndromes and treatment options.

First of all XRAYS never show soft tissue AKA herniated discs. They only show bone but they are cheaper to do so more often performed.l4, l5 and s1 herniations are serious, even if you have little or no pain. I WOULD NOT get a cortisone shot. They last about 3 days but the side effects can last a life time. They do weaken bones as the other posted suggested and they can introduce arthritis- I know scientists and docs and they have told me so- "Steriods are dirty drugs- MD." Why would you doubt if they XRay comes back clear- are you asking for drugs or something. An XRay, even without obvious inflammation does not mean you cannot have pain. Arthritis and stenosis can cause pain and both are hard to detect with any accuracy on an XRay. You are probably better off just giving this injury months to years to heal. I would use ICE and Advil and walk daily and eat well. If you have a pool and an upside down machine and an acupuncturist, these things can really help. Always try to go the natural way.

What type of doctor are you seeing? I had L4-L5 decompression surgery in 1993, I had suffered with pain and discomfort since I 19, I am currently 50. I had seen Orthopedics for years and they kept telling me nothing can be done because they only look for herniation or fractures, I finally, told my new GP and he sent me to a Neuro-surgeon, and it made all the difference in the world, they are Neurologist that specialize in surgery, he found that I had complete closure of my L4-L5 spinal column area, due to a large deposits of calcium. He performed surgery and I was like a new person, I haven't had any severe back pain or spasms except during my healing process after the surgery and he told me to expect that part. Go see a Neuro-Surgeon, Orthos only look for breaks in the bones, they are bone doctors, the Neuro-Surgeon is concerned about your nerves! It is a big difference. Hope this helps you!
Try going to SpinalSurgery.com and you can get more information there!

I dont see the question friend but to confirm what you were told, in general doctors dislike performing surgury on small disc's in the spine due to the small room there and the extreamely high risk of making a mistaking and causing seriuous injury. There are known stretches and rest routines that OVER TIME will help you get back on your feet but you must relax and take it easy while your back heals itself. Good luck and be careful.

I'll bet that they want to give you a corticosteroid shot.
It's often effective at reducing inflamation in the area and helps heal the herniation.
And it's a lot less invasive than cutting your spine open.
