I love when they do that. It's so cute!!!
He wants to save it for later. Covering it hides it from other animals who want to mooch.
Lions and other big cats do this too. He is getting in touch with his inner wild child. LOL
PS He doesn't get that he is not covering it. His little mind doesn't put the two ideas of covering it, and covering it with something, together. He might though, when he gets older, mine did. We either picked up her food when she was done or she would go get some laundry and cover it. SO CUTE!!

So it won't be stolen by hyenas and other scavengers. The fact that you have no hyenas in the house doesn't matter. Kitten is operating under the command of powerful instincts and can't not do this. I had a cat named Boomer, who was very anxious about leftover food. If I left part of a bowl of chips on a table, he'd jump up and try to cover it. Funny thing I had two cats at that time and the other one never did this stuff.

I've had kittens do that.lol...They eat what they want of the food, then try to bury the rest to save for later.I've had my adult cats do this also.lol..It doesn't matter if the kitten is male or female. It;s a cat thing.. Your kitten should have kitten food, his/her young system can't handle adult cat food to well.... best of luck with your pet!

One of my cats tries to bury his food if he doesn't like it, or if the dish is placed in the wrong area of the room (it's a small room). If a breeze is blowing thru the room and it moves any papers, making a rattling noise, he won't eat his food until I place it in a "safe" part of the room. He makes the "digging" motions on the tile next to the food.

LOL, my cat Inca just learned that trick this year! The dog always tried to eat the cat's food and would growl at Inca when he went near the dog bowl. The dog (Sprinkle) spends a lot of time covering her food bowl after she is done eating.
So now Inca covers his food bowl only a few times he had to come get me to find his food because he either didn't know how to uncover it, forgot it was covered, or.. who knows, lol.
I know he does it because of the dog. I don't know if it is just that he doesn't want the dog to get it, thinks it is the 'thing to do', or thinks he is burrying his leftovers like he covers his poop in the litterbox. He also kicks things over anything 'yucky' he finds. ??? lol
