Smart money says it's a panic attack.

Panic attacks are nasty. They're hard to deal with, and when you've been pulled over by the police and have one..

Bad personal experience.

If you have it once in a blue moon, it's nothing to worry or be ashamed about. However, if it's a frequent occurance, see a mental health professional. It may be a sign of something serious, or it may be freestanding, but either way, it's probably something you want to get treated.

What you describe does indeed sound like a panic attack. You should probalby consult your doctor if they persist and become frequent. They can prescribe drugs that will reduce or stop them. My mom used to have the all the time and thats what she did.

As for the thinking about it and it freaking you out, you have to remember that the mind is very powerful and if you think that you have certain sysmptoms you will feel like you are having them whether there is an actual medical reason, and again your doctor should be able to help if it gets too bad.

Good luck.

It sounds like a panic attack, despite your doubting that it is one. You shouldn't let yourself worry about it, that will make another one more likely. You should probably see a doctor. Your feelings could have emotional or physical causes, so you should have both causes explored. Check out: http://www.webmd.com/hw/anxiety_panic_disorders/hw257192.asp
Click on "sudden, severe attacks of fear or anxiety" on that page and read the page that appears, and any other symptoms that apply. Also read "Home Treatment," "Prevention," and "Preparing For Your Appointment.". Knowledge about your symptoms may help you feel less anxious about them.

Anxiety? Ever since I could remember, I would occasionally be overcome with fear and then it passes. I read somewhere that it happens to other people too.

My episodes usually it happens when I'm waking up from a night's sleep. I'd get a sense of dispair and of doom: that a lot of things aren't going right and I'll lose everything and be homeless. Then I'd open my eyes and see daylight and everything would be OK again.
