My father is turning 80 this year. We would like to have a small party somewhere to show him we care and honor him. Although he is 80 he is still in good shape and independant. He is a WW2 veteran and he likes to fish and watch baseball and football. Does anyone have any ideas to share? I would really appreciate it.

You should invite his close friends and family to either your home or a good restaurant that is easily accessible for older people. Keep it low key. If you invite friends and family he knew when he was younger, ask them to be prepared to say a few words about him. And here'e a great gift idea for him: Go to your local library. They often have old newspapers on microfiche. Go through the dates and print out stories from the time he was born through his childhood. Just a little something here and there - a headline from the day he was born, a local happening when he was five... A comic he might have read when he was eight....

Why not get the family together and take him to a conservation area where you can have a BBQ and fish. Perhaps a big, potluck picnic. There will probably also be a playground area for the little ones if any. It will be so much fun, you could also do tug of war and potato sack races etc. Like a family picnic. As a way to honor him or tribute, maybe release 80 balloons in his honour. Maybe get the family together to do a portait or get an orr and have everyone sign it, as a gift.

Have a small gathering among the family members. Present him with an album of all of you with your own family starting from the eldest to the youngest. Make it something like a family tree but in pictures. Reassure him that u will always be there for him whenever he needs you and can call on you any x he wants. This will be the best birthday present cos he knows he can depend on you day and night.

May be he can referee a baseball or football match which u and ur family members play (ur family has to be really big :) for this sake). On his b'day u can watch war movies like "saving private ryan" if he is not bored, @ the day's morning if u hav some time. U can take him to some lake by the sunday to fish.

It seems that a party is in order.

I have one odd idea which is that I give people trees for significant occasions. Seeing the tree everyday makes them remember the happy occasion. Also when he is gone, the tree will be even more significant to his family.

I think the most important thing is for your father meet all his kids (you and your brothers and your sisters, etc) and his old friends together, and then let him have a nice chating time with his friends after the party.
I believe he would enjoy speaking his excellent stories. hehe :)
