The wet dog odor is from the dog's sebum (skin oils) sebum odor is activated when the dog gets wet...My breed does not get "wet dog" odor...it is a breed characteristic of some dogs that have long hair, instead of fur... I assume it is because they don't produce as much sebum.

Actually they don't. You will notice if a dog is fed on a high quality food they actually smell good when wet. My folks show dogs smell SO good when they are damp. I could sit and smell them forever!

When your dog's coat gets wet, natural oils are released to protect the dog. These strong smelling oils dissipate as the dog's coat dries.

I do not think is there any scientific reason. Even human body also would have same smell after taking bath without soap or wet in rain

I'm not sure they do. I used to have a Chow mix who was mostly Chow and she never smelled "doggy".

(I can't resist the obvious: "Because they all smell with their noses." lol)
