if you're looking for street worthy self defense, in my opinion, the best self defense for men and women i feel has to be krav maga, israeli fighting system.. Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States. Krav Maga is a simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios. it has great gross motor techniques that are easy to learn and easy to remember. nothing intriqute, all moves are simple and comprehensible. there are great equalizers, such as knees to the groin, elbows, clawing, plucks, etc..
learn from an instructor in your area: http://www.kravmaga.com/
or
buy a video and learn at home: http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs...
now if you're just looking for a great martial arts that is reality based i'd go with combative kickboxing or muay thai.
you'll get a great workout, learn how to punch and kick, in turn learn how to fight, in turn learn a form of self defense. kickboxing/muay thai are great for beginning martial artists, there aren't a lot of intriqute moves and it doesn't take years to get good at as other martial arts forms.
good luck!

Kokoro and JimR are correct. Muay thai is not a martial art. it is a sport. Krav Maga is not a martial art it is a self defense training taken from martial arts. Boxing today is taught as a sport only. It does not have self defense in mind when it is being taught. Neither does it anyone that I'm aware of prepare you to take on multiple attackers or weapons. Traditional or classical martial arts were developed over centuries to teach one how to preserve their live in the event of an attack or war. This would include multiple attacker and weapons defense. In order to learn those things you must have a teacher that teaches it. It is not the style it is built upon instruction and practice. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the thing you have placed on your list. They all can be great if they are being taught correctly. But they all have a purpose. Are you looking to learn how to win a contest or are you looking to learn how to defend yourself if you are ever attacked.

Perfection is an illusion my friend. You can either become a specilaist or a generalist.
You can learn a little of everything or a lot of one thing.
I recommend you study a striking art and master it for the street.
I feel it is the most practical mthod of self defense.
Grappling is great for one on one but if you have multiple attackers and you go to the ground with one you are in big trouble. Most attackers in the street have an accomplice.
I feel a traditional karate is good for the street since that is what it was created for, but I am biased...

muay thai is great. Hapkido which is good mix of TKD, Akido, and Karate. Kung Fu, Kempo, Krav Maga (isreali .. need I say more?)jujistu for ground fighting...
Best to learn one then after two years start practicing a second along with the first. But from these, the instructor will make the biggest differance (after you).

Aikido is excellent because its emphasis on blending with the attacker's movement and converting the attack's momentum into movements you as defender control (for example, a throw) enables you to defend yourself effectively without seriously harming the attacker. Advanced techniques include disarming an attacker wielding a knife, and fighting off multiple attackers.
Please be aware that actual street self-defense requires a high degree of skill in whatever martial art you choose, and that this proficiency will require serious practice, 3-5 times a week for at least a year (longer with aikido). Also remember that most martial arts were developed for hand-to-hand combat; they can't protect you from a drive-by gunman, an arsonist, or a crazy ex out to run you down with a pickup truck.
One of the lessons of martial arts is that it's much better to avoid a fight than to win it. Are there things you can do to improve your personal safety without fighting? Do them now, even before you begin looking for a dojo. They'll still be useful when you finally earn that black belt.
