Not sleeping for an extended ammount of time is harmfull to ur body. If ur making it so that u will not sleep for that ammount of time and more, then u are causing harm to ur body, and in an intentional way, so its self-harm.

I think it depends why you are trying to stay awake. I stay awake the night before I have therapy because I don't take my medication and this allows me to feel more the next day. HOWEVER, as soon as I get home from therapy I sleep.
Intention always decides if something is self harm.
Someone eating sugar when they are diabetic can be consided self harm if they do it to push their blood sugar level too high hoping to pass out or require medical attention. A diabetic eating sugar because they want a candy bar is not self harm.

I think the best thing you can do is talk to a fully qualified concellor, you could go to your local GP and they can refer you to someone who is safe and good at their job, it is good that some of these feelings are starting to go away know but you have been through such a hard time that I feel you need a little extra help through, everyone does, I have had councelling twice so far (I am not even 18!) nothing really bad has happened to me but I just needed someone to talk too about stuff (I think everyone should go through concelling at least once in their life) you can tell them anything and they are confidentail. They can help you understand why you are feeling like this and give you ways to help you cope. You are also so luckly to have a boyfriend that seems to care about you so much, (if you are worried about going to the GP by yourself you could ask him to come along) he wouldn't say any of thoes things to you if he didn't mean it he would just try and avoid the convastion. Not all boys are after sex, they may think about it (which is totally normal) but not want to go all the way yet so don't worry. Also your scars are part of your life, if you do get worried about them there are certain make up and coconut oil and coconut butter from Boots can always help. Good luck hope this helpsxxxxxxx Also James C there is no need to bring Iraq into this, their lives are really hard but totally different to ours, if someone is feeling extremely unhappy and low in confidence comparing there life to Iraq will not do anthing, it wouldn't have done anything for me when I was going through my hard time.

The question is why would you force yourself to go without sleep. Do you engage in other behaviors that can be harmful? Not sleeping for three days or more can cause significant concentration problems, disorientation, auditory and visual hallucinations and paranoia. It seems to me that there's a bigger picture going on here.

Yes.
Studies have shown that not sleeping for a few days can cause permanent mental retardation or you may suffer from hallucinations and paranoia.
They are not reversible conditions.
Sleep is important for the brain. Nuerologists think that sleep is where our brain repairs damage (especially in the 1st 4 hrs), after that we have to dream. Dreams are thought to help us sort through information that we have taken in throughout the day.
Bottom line is, if you don't want to cause brain damage, you must sleep!

I know of someone who wasn't sleeping and getting enough REM sleep to concentrate and handle the normal stresses life brings. As a result, she now has high blood pressure and has to take her daily high blood pressure medicine.
