I don't know about about freeware, but I have a 4 year old that I have taught all her letters and sounds by using the Leap Frog stuff. She is able to read 3 letter words now and doesn't start Kindergarten until Sep 07.
I bought all the movies (Letter Factory, Word Factory, Storybook factory). Its amazing how quick the kids pick up on it. You can rent them at Hollywood video & if you dont mind "breaking the law" just copy them so you have them all year.
I have also seen them on amazon.com, and target. The one at target sells the flash cards that go with the movie to really help the kids remember.
Good Luck!

Why do you want to teach them via the computer?
Why can't you use sing-songs and artwork around the classroom the way they did for years? The kids probably have technology all over their lives - with computers at home and television and video games, why don't you get back to the basics and spend some circle/carpet sitting time with them, instead of plunking them in front of machines?
I have fond memories of my kindergarten lessons, and we didn't have computers back then! I'm 22 now; don't give up on human interaction with 4 and 5 year olds!

I am a kinder teacher and I use starfall.com with my students. It starts with basic letter and sounds to use in the beginning of the year and then in January when my students are reading and know a handful of sight words we move onto the rhyming stories. I always order the books that go right along with the online stories and games to use with my students. It is only a dollar per kid and they send you 20 full color books that you staple together along with a workbook. I usually just send the workbook pages home- some parents are always asking for extra practice and it goes hand in hand with the online stuff.
Anyway- it really is an awesome sight.

Integrating computer technology at the kindergarten level is VERY important in addition to traditional means. My 1st graders have had laptops and PC specials since kindergarten.
