Every cigarette you smoke takes approximately 8 minutes off your life. So for every year you smoke, you will lose 76 days. So for every 5 years you smoke, you will lose over one full year. So if you start smoking at 13 and are healthy at the time, and would live to be 75 naturally (75 is the approximate life expectancy in the US)... If you smoked only 5 cigarettes a day forever after that, you would die around 60. But you would probably develop cancer by 45 and die by 50. So you wouldn't even live to see your grandkids be born or grow up. You might not even live long enough to see your own kids graduate high school or college. Most likely though, after time, you would start smoking more than 5 cigarettes a day, so you'd probably die even sooner than that.
My dad started smoking when he was 19. He died of cancer at 59. He never even got to see me go to prom, or graduate, or go off to college. He'll never see me get married or see his grandkids. He never even got to see my sister finish Junior High. It's very very hard for both of us. So please think about how your smoking will be affecting those around you. It might not severely hurt you or anyone else in the short term, but IT WILL. It just takes time. QUIT WHILE YOU CAN! It becomes nearly impossible to quit after just 5 years of smoking. The additives and toxins are so strong and you begin to crave them so much that it's so hard to let go and if you do, withdrawl will nearly kill you (or could kill you).
My mom is a nurse, and she sees men and women in the hospital almost every day that are dieing of cancer. Many of them only in their 40s. Some even have small children whom they will never get to see grow up. It's so sad.
So to make a long story short, you won't "die soon" per se if you start at 13, but you will die after having lived a much shorter, unfulfilled, unaccomplished life. It will be much more painful and much more hurtful for those around you. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!
Every smoker I have ever met has regretted the day they started. My boyfriend started 3 years ago and now smokes a full pack a day (He started at just 5 a day too). He wishes more than anything that he could go back to the day he was given his first cigarette and just throw it to the ground. It's only been 3 years and he has tried quitting hundreds of times and it hasn't worked. Quitting is NOT easy! You might think it's as simple as "throw them away and don't start again" but it's *NOT*. TRUST ME! I have never started smoking and would never think about putting one to my mouth. The commitment is binding. It's like making a deal with the devil.
Good news is, if you quit by 20 or so, your lungs can "heal" themselves and you will slowly begin to gain back that lost time. If you quit by 20 or 25, your risk of cancer is GREATLY reduced. If you quit by 30, it's reduced, but you will not gain much of your life back and your lungs will be permanently damaged. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

You won't die soon. Actually it's a drag to die from smoking cigarrettes, because you slowly choke from Emphesima. It's not a very romantic way to go. And of course you could get lung cancer really any time, but if you do get cancer, it will probably happen after a few years. Smoking at 13 though will kill you, because you will get hooked, and not be able to stop until it's too late. Smoking just a little bit isn't good for you, I mean even air pollution is bad for you, so much more is smoking and second hand smoke.

Smoking weakens your internal systems considerably. It's possible that your circulation can become poor, and adding it to other bad habits it can cause some unfortunate events. There are young people who have died of blood clots and stuff.
Also smoking is a continuum because it's an addictive substance and it spans for years and years, so in a regular smoker's lifetime they will smoke until they're past their middle age because the addiction won't let them quit. By around 40 you might be a mess and prime candidate for several types of cancers and heart disease. Replace smoking with other activities because it's very toxic.

When you start smoking in your teens, you disrupt your normal growth patterns. You change your chemistry. You limit the oxygen circulating in your body and replace it with carbon monoxide from the cigarettes.
If you start smoking at such a young age (and if you're female), you have a far higher risk of breast cancer. You potentially also damage and mutate cells which is the beginnings of some forms of cancer. Cancer grows at different rates in different people, but the young are especially vulnerable because their cells are still in the process of maturing.
Why take the chance? Truly, smoking is NOT worth damaging yourself, short term OR long term.

Seriously, when I see a question like this, it reminds me of all those who ask the question, "what is a good career to go into". The subject matter of your question is exactly why a career in the Health Services (nursing, rehabilitation, disease control, end of life assistance) is still emerging as one of the fastest growing job opportunity fields. There are so many who don't understand the damage they do to their bodies, or just don't care, that the end result is a boon for opportunities for those wanting to enter the care industry. No offense to you on this one, because I'm just using your subject as an example of so many other questions with a similar theme, and how one ties into the other.

the carcinogens start to build up as soon as you start smoking. it will take years depending on one's body before the cancer can occur.
