I would say AVG Antivirus from Grisoft. This is a light weight, active scanner. They have a free version with Bi-monthly to monthly updates. http://free.grisoft.com
What you don't get is support. You can buy a yearly license for around $35 with other options to lower the price per computer (as little as $15 per computer).
This will not gum your machine like Norton, and is faster then McAfee with a 100% identification and removal rate.

I was told that the best one to have is Spybot Search and Destroy. The reason being that Norton Anti-Virus and other anti-virus programs can sometimes eliminate important files that operate your computer. Spybot doesn't do this and it can be downloaded free from the Internet. I use it every day to eleminate viruses that my kids put on my computer from all of the Internet sites they go, especially music sites and game sites. You can also get the Google toolbar and it will help block pop-up windows. When you go to a site that has to give you a pop up you can unblock it. If your "cookies" are set to a high number then you won't be able to get to all of the sites unless it is lowered. Viruses are inevitable but fortunately if you don't let your kids download then you will have less viruses. I hope this helps you.

McAfee is pretty good but so is AVG. Norton is okay. AVG has a free version online at their website but also offers a more advance paid version. McAfee and Norton are paid services. Try the free AVG and the Yahoo pop-up blocker combo. They have worked great for me and I go to all types of websites.

A firewall is your best protection. Anything gets past that, YOU let it in.
