God exists in everything and everyone. He is life and love. You don't have to think of "Him" as a person in order to benefit by having knowledge of him and being in tune with him(the universe). He is all that is, and is in all that is. Also he does not control our lives. We use our free will, and from then on it's just a matter of cause and effect.
For clarification, read Conversations with God (by N.D. Walsch). It is a very non-offensive book for someone looking for such answers.
