DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR CAT AND HAVE IT END UP IN A ANIMAL SHELTER BECAUSE ONE NO IT ALL TELLS YOU THE BEHAVIOR RARELY STOPS. I GUESS THEY WANT TO KEEP THEIR JOB SECURE!!! Call a vet and ask if the behavior will stop. it will cost you nothing to call! In the future do it before the cat get's older.
Spraying is normally testosterone related and after doing research it does say that a neutered male will spray if suitably aroused. Don't get the cat horny!
Can happen from behavioral problems even females. Especially non altered ones.
Take most peoples advice and clean up sprayed areas as well as possible and get him neutered quickly and I am sure he won't be in the mood for spraying anytime soon. Do you have the option of letting him out of doors?
Growing up never had a problem with toms spraying INSIDE. Outside was a different story. Moved out locked the cat in an apartment and he went crazy with spraying. Even spraying a puddle on the kitchen chair during dinner when husband got up for a second. Cat was definitely trying to tell me something. Told mom cat had to come back home. Neutering is not very expensive and it least you'll have given the cat a chance to not be put down in an animal shelter because it is not house broken.

Getting him fixed is the only chance to get him to stop, but once the behavior is learned, it rarely stops.

Should have neutered him BEFORE the spraying started!!!!!!!

People are funny!!!! How can neutering cause them NOT to be able to spray????? They spray URINE. Neutering does not stop the cat from being able to pee. They can still spray JUST FINE after neutering!!!!!!! You cannot stop the ability to spray!!!!!!!!!!

I work in a cat shelter and I see neutered cats that spray ALL the time...even females!!!!

WOW!!!! You need help ther farmgirl!!!!! Spraying anal gland fluid is different from spraying urine!!!!!! They have no muscles that empty the anal glands, they empty when they get full by defacation. That is why they can get impacted. Urine spraying is easy for them because the bladder is a muscle!!!!!!!! That is how you pee!!!!!!!!!! I think most people know that tom cats spray urine. I can't believe YOU don't!!!!!!!!!!! You need a basic anatomy lesson!!! And just like human females, female cats have a bladder of muscle and can force it out and onto a wall.
And everytime the cat bakes up to a wall and quivers the tail, it does not mean they are spraying at that time. Guess you do not know alot about cats!!!!

Definitely getting him fixed will help the problem, that is why he is spraying, to mark his territory as a male. How old is he? He needs to be at least 3 months old to be neutered. Don't wait too long to have the surgery or there is a chance that he will continue to spray even after he is fixed.

Neutered male cats still spray. I am an EXPERT on male cats spraying my house. I am also an expert at curing it. Here is how:

1. Get him neutered at the youngest age they will allow, to avoid hormones taking charge.
2. When he first sprays, put him outside night and day for days, weeks, etc., and let him in on "probation" to test him. If he fails, out again. The reason for this is that they really PREFER to go outside, and when they are out, they get out of the habit of going inside. I have to do this once a year or so to break a male cat.
3. Once OUTSIDE, literally remove the floor, if you have to, where he peed. Not a single remnant of small can be left. I even had my top stairway removed and replaced.
4. Let him in for short periods of time once he is broken, and put him out no more than a half to one hour after coming in. He has to earn his inside privileges now.
5. When you catch him, have a squirt bottle of water ready, or say "sssssssssssssssssssssssssssss" like a snake really loud. It TERRIFIES him and he will run for his life. Toss him outside for days or weeks. He will come back a new cat.

IT WORKS!

Definitely get him fixed, it may not keep him from spraying though if he has already started but there is a chance it will. Also to get the smeiil out get a spray called Nature's Miracle. It's a product specifically for cat urine and it works wonders!!

Ive had the same problem. You can try neutering it, but it might just need to become an outside cat. Sorry. Once that smell is n there, it is sometimes hard to break them of even peeing on that spot again. I had to give two cats up because of this.
