Im turning 16 this year and I plan to put a $4,000 down payment and pay about $250 a month. This will be my first car, but my dad has taught me a lot about taking care of a car, so I decided to buy a brand new Toyota Yaris S Sedan. So im wondering if this would be a good decision for a first car?

It dont matter how old you are, i got into my first wreck at 21. Obviously you seem very responsible for a 16 yr old, if you are paying this by yourself and your father must trust you quite well cause obviously someonehas to co sign this car with you. The Yaris would be a very good car, would have a warranty on it, brand new, dont have to worry about unknown problems that might occur with used cars. PLUS it is 40 mpg. which is great considering the gas prices. Obviously you would need insurance since you are putting down a payment for it, it wouldnt be as high as some ppl think considering what kind of car it is, would be higher if you got a more sporty, fast car. But will be higher than usual because you are ateenager. Good luck!

Toyota's are good cars. The Yaris just got a decent rating from Comsumer Reports. However, at 16, you're not going to get a loan. You have to be 18 to sign contracts.

Insurance is going to eat you alive, though. You might want to consider buying something used and just getting liability coverage on it. Drive carefully since you won't have collision coverage! Get insurance quotes first and factor that all into your decision. It's not going to do you any good if your insurance costs an additional $250.00 per month (very possible!) and you can't afford gas!

aside from my not recommending buying a *new* car for your first car, I'd say its a very good choice. Safe, easy to drive, good on gas, toyota reliability. Again though, I recommend something used as a first car. It doesn't matter if you know how to take care of it, if you crash it. Speaking of which, have you factored insurance into what its going to cost to own that car?

With cars becoming so high tech, theres really nothing much to do about taking care of cars like the old days car of non-injection.
