Could be a variety of reasons. Perhaps the store owner wanted to save some stock for other customers.

Note to other posters.....Prices on ammo can range dramatically for the same item depending on the store. If you find a great deal on ammo and can afford it stock up. Certain calibers such as 7.62X39, 5.56X45 (.223) and 7.63X51 (.308) has seen serious spikes in price because of the war and the rearming of tha Iraqi military. I bought 4,000 rounds of 7.62X39 a year ago at $89 per 1,000 rounds. The prices now go up to $199 per 1,000 for the same ammo in places. Do I shoot 4,000 rounds at one time? no, but I have gone through about half at the range.

Because there are Federal laws that prevent the purchase of mass ammo for high powered, semi automatic firearms.

Typically 1000 rounds are allowed. NO ONE needs 5000 rounds of 7.62 ammo for target shooting.

No one buys that much ammo at one time, unless your buying in bulk and work for a police department.

500 rounds of 7.62 winchester ammo cost about $244.00 per case. I don't see you shooting that much in one week.

Just buy direct from a gun show.

Yeah right, likely story,
5,000 rounds are not nearly enough for target shooting,
you are obviously going deer hunting and it is out of season!.

cuz gun stores dont let people buy bulk ammo like that unless ur a cop or military. people learned from the north hollywood shootout.

I doubt anyone would refuse to sell ammunition, if you can't kill someone with 20-30 rounds, you won't be able to kill them with 5,000 rounds.

why are you buying that much at a local store? there are better prices online, and with an order like that you could get free shipping.
