Well find things that are interesting to talk about like travel, vacation spots, food, and I agree to stay away from religion and politics also, good point there! Ask questions, be polite, try to find some common ground, if they are smiling and nodding and leaning forward especially they are interested in what you are saying, if they keep looking around and have a glazed over look on their face you might want to try a different topic---good luck!

Stay away from religion and politics. I find most people like to talk about themselves, so ask general questions to get them talking and the conversation should move along nicely. Also, do not try to top any story they tell. If they ask you questions do not give too short a reply because it is your obligation to make conversation. Food and wine are always good subjects and of course the weather and travels.

1. Never talk politics, religion or sex.
2. Listen to others and do less talking about yourself.
3. Read the paper before you go so that you can talk about current events.
4. Talking about movies is usually a good topic - or about books.
5. Never talk about anything disgusting or unsavory that might put people off their food.
Talking about hobbies can be a good topic.

1. Truly, deeply intentionally LISTEN to the person to whom you are speaking. 2. Give them your undivided attention, as if you really gave a damn. If you're honest w/ yourself you would admit to wanting no less. 3. Be curious about life and others ...what makes them 'tick'. 4. Why they believe and think what they do without you inserting yourself into the equation or becoming defensive and needing to assert yourself as if you would cease to exist if you didn't. 5. This will teach you a lot about human nature and how rare true listening is in our society.
AND # 6 (a bonus) Be prepared to not have anyone reciprocate the gesture because we live in a ME ME ME world!
