Your ears should equalize themselves naturally as you climb up to altitude, however, during the descent, they will not equalize themselves naturally. As such, you need to do something called the "Valsalva Maneuver".

1. Take a deep breath.

2. Close your mouth.

3. Plug your nose with your hand, both nostrils.

4. Forcefully exhale as though you were blowing your nose (against your closed nostrils).

5. This will open up your eustacian tubes and will eqalize the pressure during the descent.

6. Repeat this process as you continue to descend.

This is how scuba divers are able to dive to deep depths without any troubles or pain with their ears. Personally, I have scuba dived to over 120 feet under water. You have to do the Valsalva Maneuver every few feet.

I am also a pilot and I have to do the Valsava Maneuver every single time I fly. I hope this helps. Have fun in Vegas, I wished I could join you!!!

Swallowing helps, but yawning is most effective. I would be careful trying to blow your nose with your nostrils shut – that forces pressure into the ears and can end up just making things worse. If you do have to resort to that, do it gently so as to prevent damage, and make sure your ears aren't clogged with anything else before you fly. The idea is to release pressure from the ears, not add to it.

Most will say chewing gum. I have never known this to work for me, though. I rarely have a problem with my ears plugging up during flight anymore. Maybe you just get used to it.

Learn to equalize your ears like divers do. This helps me.

(hold your nose shut, GENTLY try to exhale through your nose until you feel it equalize, then swallow. Works every time)
